Last Year's Global Aurora-Sparking "Superstorm" Squashed Earth's Plasmasphere To A Fifth Its Usual Size
The compression of the plasmasphere was extreme, but the slow recovery time was an even bigger shock.

🧲🌏 Revealing the effect of a super geomagnetic storm

With the help of #NREN of #Japan 🇯🇵 #NICT, #Researchers found a 2024 geomagnetic storm suppressed the plasmasphere for over 4 days, with electron density dropping up to 90%.

🌍The Earth's plasmasphere is a region of cold, dense plasma found in the inner magnetosphere. It's important to monitor for #SpaceWeather as its dynamics relate to e.g. the outer radiation belt inner boundary♾️& spacecraft charging risks🛰️
