Platyhystrix? I hardly know her!

Metri has been a blast to play after the TLC. Mine has carved out a niche in the Arazoa ecosystem with a diet mainly consisting of mushrooms, carrion, snakes, and Platyhystrix. Population control 🔥

A bunch of paleontology-inspired dragon critters from a few years back. Which one would you like as a pet? Somehow, I have a soft spot for the turqoise-eyed weirdo.

Dimetrodon attacks a congregation of breeding Platyhystrix. Edaphosaurs watch. It's really intriguing to me how all of these Permian Southwestern animals convergently evolved sailbacks.

TIL about platyhystrix! (Looks like the name has an accidental capital L)

Spectacular work! I love all these big headed weirdos!

Part of that revision of Aspidosaurus was then published in my redescription of Aspidosaurus novomexicanus from the Permo-Carb of New Mexico - I designated this as a nomen dubium because it's too poorly preserved to diagnose (though it could be another known dissorophid): doi.org/10.26034/la....

no no no dim dims are too big they threaten the bugs. i appreciate the sails but i'd rather keep them as small as platyhystrix

I see a Permian enjoyer, so here's some Permian art!

Platyhystrix was one of the many - curiously, unrelated - animals with a sail from around this time. Was it a thermoregulation device? An ornamental feature to impress mates? Maybe both? Regardless, it probably didn't make hiding from predators any easier.

Clumsy Hunter

In the early Permian, a little less than 300 million years ago, life on land had long been rich and diverse, but most of the animals were still a bit... goofy.

Here's Eryops chasing down a Platyhystrix in a lush riverside forest in what is now Texas, some 290 million years ago.

Latest #watercolor is the weird (saying a lot by amphibian standards) temnospondyl, #Platyhystrix. The crest on the back is made of elongated armor plates, not extended vertebra like most other sailbacked animals. #paleoart

From 2017: Platyhystrix wanders out of a Permian swamp next to the roots of a fallen tree. This ancient dissorophid #amphibian is only known from its sail, so the closely related genus Cacops provides the rest of the body. #paleoart #fossil #paleontology #sciart
