We are playing one of our favorite board games, a super-fun resource-building game called Machi Koro. There are a few different versions, all are great.
@pandasaurusgames.com is one of our favorite game publishers, never played a game from them we didn’t like. This one is highly recommended!

We run an East Asian Top Trumps class - I'm not sure Top Trumps has exists in N America, but students each do a biographical case study, and assemble them all into a card game. We print out decks for all the students.
Here's a write up of a previous version:

Finished the first five water starter Pokemon for my custom kai awase (shell matching) set for #PlayingJapan. The Piplups are so derpy, I tried to make the Mudkips smiley, but I’m proud of the Totodiles which are a weird shape to begin with

Ok so I hear profs here are liable to wear costumes to class near Halloween. Sadly my homemade FFX-2 Yuna in Gunner dress sphere costume from elementary school doesn’t fit anymore 😅
Who from Japanese video games could I be for Halloween? 🤔 #PlayingJapan

Final Fantasy Final Fantasy X-2
Alt: A scene early in the Square Enix PlayStation game Final Fantasy X-2 when Yuna in her main/Gunner sphere costume flips into the frame shooting double pistols and lands dramatically. Text at the bottom reads “Lock in!”

I’m so excited that I was able to pick up a Tōsenkyō (fan throwing game) set from the Hangesho fan shop in Kyoto for my games course! I hope the students can appreciate it 🥹🙏🪭🦋 #PlayingJapan

#PlayingJapan class was a blast! The emperor has favored a few discerning students of the Way of Incense & Pokemon aficionados.
Today's Genjikō answer is the Tale of Genji Chapter 28, "Nowaki" 野分 or "The Autumn Typhoon," which is apt for the season & the weather in both Japan & Moscow, ID today. ⛈️

Tomorrow’s #PlayingJapan class is dedicated to the games played by Japan’s nobility. We’ll play Pokemon kai awase (shell matching), Genjikō (an incense game), & Go.
Since we’re not allowed to set things on fire on campus (FINE IG 😅), I’m balling in a budget w/ mini glass jars & Japanese tree oils.🌿

Today in #PlayingJapan, our Genpei War (team vs. team) karuta battle was fun, but the hanafuda cards were the big hit! Some students are planning to get some Nintendo decks for upcoming family holidays. 😁

Going all in on the theme for #PlayingJapan this fall. 😅 Spent my morning creating character sheets for intro, midterm, & course end self evaluations, instead of my usual “tell me abt your bg & your expectations in 300-500 words”. Happy to share a blank Canva link or PDF if anyone wants to repurpose

Lot’s of anime tie-ins for our next #PlayingJapan class, namely Summer Wars (2009) and Chihayafuru (2011-2020). Can you guess what card games we’re learning about and playing tomorrow? 🎴 Comment guesses in the next post in the thread! ⬇️
