#Pliocene
to be fair, the Pliocene vibes were off the charts

Hi @coastalpaleo.bsky.social , so I was contacted by a local museum here in southern Spain to access this block of rock with whale bones. At a closer look it's a good ho skull and some vertebra of a small mysticeti (cetotheria?), based on all the associated gigantipectwn it's likely mid Pliocene 1/2

Balthazar is thinking about the Pliocene Era. It looks blank.

The larger fossils suggesting a larger size are much older - Pliocene in age, from CA, Hydrodamalis cuestae (2-4 myo)

Like Julian May’s Saga of Pliocene Exile, how about sf with fantasy tropes?

These ghost bats (Macroderma gigas) are ghosts in another way:

They're phylogenetic relicts whose lineage traces back to radiations in the Miocene & Pliocene. Their closest living relatives are in India & we know they once ranged across Australia.

Now you know about some ghost bats! 🎃

No, the size decrease likely happened earlier in the Pleistocene. The 10 meter long ones lived in the Pliocene. Modeling suggests that Hydrodamalis could have gone extinct completely through overhunting of otters without early humans seeing or killing a single sea cow

Which means my verts skew Paleocene and i don’t actually find much Mio-Pliocene material

Diagenetic pathways and preservation of bulk and amino acid δ15N in bivalve shell organic matter across the Holocene to the Pliocene
Nitrogen isotope (δ 15 N) records preserved in mollusc shells have strong potential to reconstruct changes in nitrogen sources, transformations and transport in the ocean beyond instrumental observations. This is because mollusc shells can be precisely dated and often preserve highly temporally reso

@marypcbuk.bsky.social Thank you for bringing Julian May up a few months ago. I have reread the Saga of the Pliocene Exile and wrote about it. I don’t expect ypu to read muy thread since it is in Danish, but wanted to tell you that your posts inspired me :-)

Capybara lived in Florida through the Pliocene and most of the Pleistocene, so they would have been present in Florida 3 million years ago. But capybara went (locally) extinct in Florida during the last major glaciation of the Pleistocene, and there's no evidence of their […]

In the Pliocene (3M years ago-with 400ppm CO2) temperatures were 3°C hotter.
3°C is best case. Pliocene is locked in.
fact-180 @profbillmcguire.bsky.social
Miocene (16Mya 600ppm) temperatures were 6°C up is the BAU case.
Eocene (600ppm CO2) temperatures were 12°C up.

Another million years have passed. It is the Mid Pliocene Era. You count the years, days and seconds as they pass. The interstellar fog has passed as Earth moves into the Local Bubble. The stars fill the sky, too numerous to count, but you have nothing but time on your hands.

The feeding is wild and good. You stay clear of the oceans. The megaladons still rule the oceans. You stay at the edge counting grains of sand.

A million years have passed. It is the Early Pliocene Epoch. The Mediterranean Sea has all but evaporated. The first hominins are forming.

The changes in climate to be expected ahead are huge. During ice ages, CO2 levels were typically around 180 to 300 ppm. At Earth equilibrium, that 120 ppm loss in insulation covered continents in ice.
Today's greenhouse gas insulation is another 120 ppm higher - Pliocene level high.

The ongoing argument that the Gulf of California extending halfway up to, essentially, Nevada 5 or 6 million years ago doesn't get the attention it deserves outside of people working in geology.
