Over bijzonder veel insecten weten we bijzonder weinig, eigenlijk. Deze haakjesschildwants (Podops inuncta) valt eigenlijk het meest op doordat 'ie maffe haakjes op het halsschild heeft, naast de kop. De nimfen eten grassen. Weten we ook. En ze overwinteren als imago. #ElkeDagEenInsect

Bycatch from yesterday's fungal foray at NWT Sweetbriar Marshes in Norwich.

Knobbed Shieldbug (aka Turtle Shieldbug), Podops inuncta, and Smooth Newts (Lissotriton vulgaris).
Knobbed Shieldbug (aka Turtle Shieldbug), Podops inuncta. A medium-sized, brown shieldbug easily recognised by the pronotal projections on either side of the head plus the long, tongue-like scutellum. Three rather torpid Smooth Newts (Lissotriton vulgaris) found on a tree trunk under bark (which was put back after the photo was taken).

Some highlights from yesterday's #invertebrate surveying at NWT Sweet Briar Marshes - Drinker caterpillar, Podops inuncta, Euophrys frontalis and Uleiota planata (a welcome new species for me).
A caterpillar head down on a dead plant stem. The caterpillar is blue-grey with paired small black tufts along its length bordered with yellow flecks. There is a white line along its flanks and a large black tuft of hairs slightly behind its head. A small oval brown shieldbug sitting on the photographer's hand. The surface of the bug is heavily pitted and there are two small hooked projections on the corner of the pronotum. It is sometimes called a Knobbed Shieldbug but is also known as a Turtle Shieldbug. A tiny jumping spider sitting on a piece of grey roofing felt (used as a reptile refuge). A rather flat, elongate dark grey beetle with reddish legs and long reddish antennae. The beetle is on the underside of a piece of tree bark that is crusted with white fungoid growth.
