Since 2020, the UNICEF #PoemsForPeace initiative has gathered over 8,000 poems from children in Ukraine, and thousands more from conflict zones around the world — each one a testament to the resilience of children, even in the darkest of circumstances.
A poem titled "I Was in First Grade When the War Began" by Ivan, a 10-year-old from Zaporizhzhia, 2023. The poem reflects on experiences of war, including air raid sirens, dreams and the impact on daily life, family and feelings of safety.
