To give context for how intimately slavery is still woven in with the current day, her father was enslaved at birth on Joel Roberts Poinsett's plantation near Charleston, SC.

Joel Poinsett was the first US minister to Mexico and a botanist. The poinsettia is named after him. He is also my ancestor.
On this day in 1898, Septima Poinsette Clark was born. She became a tireless advocate for education and civil rights. Martin Luther King, Jr., called her the “Mother of the Movement.” Her motto was “literacy means liberation.” #WeTheMen

However, very quickly it got the name "Poinsettia" after the US botanist Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779 – 1851). Since 1826, Poinsett sent the flowers to his greenhouses in the US. Poinsett was also a diplomat and a lawmaker who enslaved people. So, already a terrible person, but only the intro.

No surprise! People from Boston can immediately tell I’m not from here, but my accent is nowhere near what it was while I was growing up in Poinsett County, Arkansas fifty years ago.

Today is National Poinsettia Day. The beautiful flower is named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, who died this day 1851. He was a physician/botanist and the first American Ambassador to Mexico. He sent the samples back to South Carolina from Mexico. This flower has a long history in Aztec culture.

Mexico started off as an Empire, and Monroe and Poinsett didn't like that. They would rather have a republic or, at the very least, a smaller Mexico. Poinsett tried to convince the Mexican foreign affairs ministers to sell the territories, but the proposals were rejected.

Poinsettias are amazing plants. Their name, though? Problematic.
Joel Poinsett was an enslaver and, as Secretary of War, directed the Trail of Tears
In Nahuatl language of C America and S Mexico, the plant's home, the name is Cuetlaxōchitl, pronounced kwe-tla-SHO-cheetl
