May I introduce: Dolly! 🎬

ATT's new engine has a name! Since I've received quite a few questions about it, I've put together a new Kickstarter update with more details, screenshots and videos showing Dolly in action🤓

Update 40: May I Introduce? Dolly! · A Twisted Tale
Dear adventure friends, here I am again! And this time, for a change, there hasn't been an entire year between two Kickstarter updates. Hard to believe, I know.I hadn't actually expected to write another update quite so soon. But I had somewhat underestimated the announcement of the engine change. Or rather, the wave of interest that has reached me through various channels. So I'll try to answer the most pressing questions here, starting right at the beginning: the engine is called "Dolly". Just like the camera dolly used in filmmaking. I wanted a short, memorable name, and originally it was just my internal project name. But I've grown so used to it that I've decided to keep it. So, may I introduce: Dolly! Why on Earth Build My Own Engine?!In my last update, I already explained why I decided to leave Visionaire Studio behind.Over the years, I've implemented more and more features through my own Lua scripts and modified existing processes to develop A Twisted Tale the way I envision it.With Chapter 2, this became increasingly complicated. I wanted the world Vio explores to be even more detailed, more playful and more atmospheric. Even for Chapter 1, I'd had ideas that I hadn't been able to realise quite the way I'd wanted. This time, I didn't want to make any compromises. And so, at some point, I found myself wondering whether I should keep trying to squeeze my ideas into the existing possibilities, or whether I should create an environment where those limitations simply wouldn't exist in the first place.Well. Apparently, I went for the slightly more complicated option. But I think that's becoming something of a habit with me. ;)Because what originally grew out of the requirements of A Twisted Tale has since developed into a complete development environment.Dolly is an independent engine with a fully featured graphical editor, developed specifically for point & click adventures and visual novels. From the very beginning, it was important to me that it wouldn't work exclusively for A Twisted Tale. Not only because I have other ideas for little side projects or game jams (don't worry, those are still a long way off), but also because at some point I started thinking: if I'm going to put this much work into something, it should at least be easier to manage than the 347 unnamed Photoshop layers I usually juggle (anyone who's watched me on Twitch knows what a chaotic person I am).An Editor That Runs in Your BrowserOne of Dolly's special features is certainly that the entire editor runs directly in your browser. This was particularly important to me because I don't normally have access to my project when I'm attending events and conventions, but I also don't want to carry my laptop around with all that sensitive data on it. Now I can access my game from anywhere. Even from my phone.Note regarding images and videos: Dolly’s user interface is not yet final and may still be subject to change! Projects are stored in the cloud, where they can be edited and tested directly in the editor. Any changes made in the editor are immediately passed on to the test instance that's already running. And of course, the games eventually need to reach the players. That's why Dolly can already create builds for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and browsers. These export options aren't just planned. They've already been implemented and tested.https://youtu.be/bybbCtmgMTE What Happens to All the Existing Content of A Twisted Tale? This was one of the biggest challenges in developing Dolly and, at the same time, one of my most important requirements.Under no circumstances did I want to have to rebuild all the content I'd created for A Twisted Tale over the years from scratch. This was the main reason why, although I'd occasionally looked into engines such as Godot or Unity, I'd always ruled them out as options for A Twisted Tale. That's why Dolly can import existing Visionaire projects. This includes backgrounds, objects, characters, animations, dialogues, texts, audio files, actions and scripts, among other things. The existing data is imported and transferred into Dolly's own project system. If, for whatever reason, a particular feature isn't supported yet, it will be listed in a report. To put that into perspective: in the A Twisted Tale demo alone, the various Visionaire action parts are used a total of 10,301 times.Dolly already supports 99% of those uses.Of course, that doesn't automatically mean that 99% of all the features of the previous engine are supported. But it gives you a pretty good idea of how far I've come with importing my existing project. And most importantly, it means I can continue using the work I've already done on A Twisted Tale. And Your Savegames? There's good news here, too!Dolly has a completely independent save system of its own. The engine therefore doesn't rely on the way Visionaire manages its savegames. At the same time, I've created a way to import existing Visionaire savegames into this new system. This also works with savegames created in older versions of A Twisted Tale. For you, this means that if you've already started or completed Chapter 1, you'll still be able to use your existing savegames after the engine change. This was an essential part of the whole project for me. Not least because it also makes working on an episodic adventure considerably easier. In short: you won't have to start all over again just because I came up with the idea of programming an entire engine. And What About Going Back?Incidentally, Dolly can not only import existing Visionaire projects, but also export projects back into the Visionaire format. The necessary information is retained in the background for this purpose.Of course, there's one limitation: Dolly now includes features that Visionaire doesn't support. These therefore can't be transferred when exporting. The editor will warn you which elements aren't backwards compatible and would be lost during export. What Else Can Dolly Do?Of course, developing Dolly wasn't just about recreating existing features.Above all, I wanted to implement the things I'd been missing while developing A Twisted Tale, or things that had previously required a considerable amount of extra work. And quite a lot has come together by now. Here are a few features that have already been implemented:Shaders and Particle EffectsDolly has its own shader system, which allows visual effects to be applied to individual objects, characters, backgrounds or even the entire screen. There are already various predefined templates, for example for snow, dust or rim lighting. The effects can be adjusted directly in the editor and viewed in a preview. Additional shaders can also be freely configured and added. What's more, multiple shaders can be applied to the same object at once.https://youtu.be/hoBZrSS1_yI There's also a dedicated particle system. This makes it possible to create fire, smoke or other, more subtle effects directly in the editor. A live preview shows how the particles behave in the game.I'll probably use both of these features sparingly on the Caribbean island in Chapter 2. The traditional frame by frame animations will remain. But by using shaders and particle effects subtly, I can give the classic animations a little visual support and enhance the atmosphere of the scenes.Lighting and SoundAnother area that was particularly important to me was the design and influence of lighting. In Chapter 2, you'll be able to explore a variety of different atmospheres with Vio. One moment you'll be in a dimly lit pirate bar, the next you'll be on a beach in glorious sunshine. There are night scenes and the jungle. And other areas, each bringing their own atmospheric challenges. Early on, I started thinking about the role lighting could play. Until now, lighting in A Twisted Tale has been created using PNG images with transparency, placed in the foreground of a scene (for example, in the antique shop). In Dolly, I can place and adjust different light sources directly within a scene. These include point lights, spotlights and directional lights.Characters can also react to these light sources. For example, if a character is standing next to a light source, the side facing it can be highlighted with additional rim lighting.https://youtu.be/R6WfeOptutw Something similar applies to sounds.Sound sources can be placed at specific positions within a scene. Their volume changes depending on how far away the player is from them. This was particularly important to me because I wanted to give Maxim (sound) and Micha (music) more creative freedom when creating their audio.Soundscapes can also be composed of a continuous background sound and individual sounds played at random intervals. This allows sounds and audio elements to be combined directly within the engine, offering maximum freedom during the creative process.Especially for the larger and more elaborate scenes in Chapter 2, this opens up some lovely possibilities. For example, you'll already be able to hear the sounds coming from the bar while Vio is still standing outside.Objects, Groups and TemplatesI also wanted to make many aspects of working in the editor easier for myself.Objects in Dolly can be combined into groups. For example, if a cupboard consists of several individual parts, I can move, rotate or scale them all together. This also works with light sources and sound sources that belong to the group. There's also a template system that allows elements to be created once and reused.Changes to a template can be applied to all elements derived from it without losing their individual adjustments.I've also expanded the system for character outfits. One outfit can be based on another, so not every animation has to be created multiple times if only certain ones are different. This allows me to create even more detailed emotional animations or makes it considerably easier to position Roachy on Vio's shoulder.I'm currently expanding this area a little further, as it will support some of the puzzle designs.Of course, there are plenty of other features. But if I were to go into every single one of them, this update would probably end up being longer than the last one. Depending on how interested you are, I'd be happy to give you a more detailed look in future updates. What's Next for Dolly? It didn't take long before people started asking whether I was planning to make Dolly available to other developers. Although Dolly originally grew out of the requirements of A Twisted Tale, I can imagine making the engine available to other developers in the long term. The editor is already working, the cloud connection is in place and the various export options have been tested. At the moment, I'm working on giving a small number of selected developers access to Dolly to see how they get on with the engine and what bugs might turn up. Because as well as I know my own editor by now, it's obviously a completely different matter when someone uses it who hasn't personally programmed every single feature. It's not all that different from the playtests of A Twisted Tale. ;)There's still quite a bit I want to improve and add, and I can't and don't want to give a specific date for a public release just yet. But I'm really pleased that Dolly has already attracted interest from other developers, and I'd love to be able to give something back to the community. And What About A Twisted Tale?Of course, A Twisted Tale remains not only at the heart of everything I do, but also my top priority. After all, Dolly came into existence precisely because of A Twisted Tale. Chapter 2 has been developed in the new engine for quite some time now. I'd been putting off announcing the engine change for a long time because it's not a decision I take lightly. But since Chapter 2 has already been built and further developed in Dolly for quite a while, I felt it was time to reveal my biggest secret to you.So I want to emphasise this: Dolly isn't something I've only just started developing, nor has it only just reached the point where I can attempt to build Chapter 2 with it. Chapter 2 has been in development using Dolly for quite some time. The engine itself isn't particularly new to me. The only new thing is the announcement that it exists. As mentioned in my last update, Chapter 1 will also be switched over to the new engine when Chapter 2 is released, and will be updated accordingly on Steam and itch.io.I hope this update has given you a slightly better idea of what Dolly is all about and what I've been working on during all those many, many long nights. In any case, I'm really looking forward to showing you more of Chapter 2 in the future.Thank you so much for your interest, your messages and, of course, your continued patience and support! I'd also like to say another very special thank you to everyone who reached out to me about the AI topic in my last update (whether through comments or private messages). It really, really means a lot to me!Stay healthy and enjoy the rest of autumn,Yours,Eva--DE: Darf ich vorstellen? Dolly! Also, darf ich vorstellen: Dolly! Die klassischen Frame by Frame Animationen bleiben erhalten. Und A Twisted Tale?
