One of those pedestrian evangelical churches that can't figure out if adding drums to the band is ok with God. The pastor recognizes me but I don't think he can remember my name. One day, this well-dressed guy walks into the lobby where the pastor is greeting people and the pastor's genial smile melts off. He approaches the man, icily shakes his hand, and invites him to talk just outside the lobby. The pastor comes back but the other man does not. After the sermon, I asked him what happened. He was like "You might not have seen it but he had a gay pride lapel pin on. You get to recognize that type" "That type?" I asked "You have to nip it in the bud immediately. These guys come in and they're always the most professional, calmest, well-put together one. And you invite them in b/c they smile and you want to be inviting to all types. Then they become a regular and they bring their spouse. And that seems ok. Good people. Then they bring their kids and you have to explain "two daddies" to 5-year-old kids in Sunday School. And they start proposing "Pride Month" events at the congregational meetings. And then you realize, oh no, they're trying to turn a house of worship into their own little playground. And then if you kick them out, they go to the press and sue you for millions and you spend the next 20 years in court. So you have to shut them down." And I was like, 'oh damn.' and he said "yeah, you have to ignore their reasonable arguments because their end goal is to be terrible, awful people."

PoliMath @politicalmath This is such a perfect example of the left-right dynamic. New England (everything east and north of New York) already has zero GOP representation. They already nuked the ground. The GOP in the South is going to severely reduce Dem representation. But this isn't the "opening salvo". It is a response to an already partisan situation. The Dems went first. They are angry that the GOP can also play that game, so they threaten consequences that can't come to pass because they already did their worst. i think the total failure of tpot, specifically the graph defined by eigen and politicalmath is: they want to make rules of social interactions, faux pas, and digital culture legible, while acknowledging how seeing like a state is, often, a disaster of policy. they're bankrupt at the meta level.

in regards to the original post here- how come "tr*nnies should die" is a challenging idea i should entertain for the sake of democracy somehow, but "trans people have always existed and are just trying to live their lives" isn't a challenging idea conservatives likewise need to hear? hmm??
