When MI5 & MI6 target ecological collapse as the UK's main threat & govt. bans barbecues as a result, we see how inept our polity is! Unfit.

Have recently discovered that Neal Asher, the SF author, is a big #SpaceKaren fan. That's him off my reading list. I read one or two of his Polity books and found them to be not that engaging, a little too much like Heinlein.

Agree with all of this — the constitution itself is not sufficient to keep polity in check. Fundamentally the Constitution is documentation of hope that others will honor its intent. No amount of tinkering with it will prevent your neighbor from interpreting or ignoring it as they see fit :/

the debacle on the other end of the Middle East says US ability to control ME affairs look better on paper then reality so I don’t see why any of the above would work. May feel good - ditching every polity over there might be nice - but US sanctions leading to a one state “solution” is fantasy

Yep. We have the highest rate of workforce participation among women of childbearing age of any polity in the world. I know a family with ten kids (the oldest is 19, the youngest four months) whose kids have gone to daycare and whose mother still works between maternity leaves.

I suspect this is because they're still using the old, pro-imperial narrative that it was Scotland's ultimate destiny to join with England to form the British state, the best and greatest polity in the world. But obviously now we know imperialism was bad, so now Scotland must be punished for it

The fundamental thing people need to understand is that Australia is a polity of compromise and consensus. This makes it a pretty good place to live but it also means our politics are incredibly wishy washy.
