Not sure, I bet opinions vary. I do tell them at the beginning of the quarter why I pause lecture to give them a chance to work problems in groups, and also tell them that the PollEV questions will be very similar to what shows up on quizzes (sometimes identical but I don’t tell them that)

Honestly....points. We use PollEV. If they respond to 90% or more of the questions over the semester, they get full credit for attendance/participation. And then once they're there, active learning/flipped classroom w/ emphasis on how this practice will help them learn the material.

Most instructors I know use ungraded, solo or small group, in-class learning activities w/ PollEv or Forms as basis for participation.

Points must add up to 100% somehow. Giving points for participation means exams can be lower stakes, less stressful, and less damaging if student has a bad day.

I like these questions, and I started using them this week via PollEV!

Agreed on the real work! I enjoy seeing what students write in reflection posts several times per semester. Also enjoy seeing what they come up with as final products of their choosing based on common guidelines. And I do lots of PollEv questions in class as formative assessment. I have one TA.

Here's the final version with all the bluesky responses added after I closed it just now. Some great responses here, including the few I disagree with (they are important perspectives to acknowledge). I'll argue about some of them a bit later.
