❗️Last night in 🇷🇺Rostov, a warehouse of polymers and plastic containers completely burned down for unknown reasons. The fire covered an area of at least 8,000 square meters.

Yeah about 4% of oil and gas output is used to make polymers. The vast majority is burnt. The uncomfortable fact for the Swinney is that polymers (and other long chain hydrocarbons) can be made without oil and gas (eg the Fischer–Tropsch process). It's bad PR only in the sense it's bullshit

It is more or less fixed as you shuffle it acording to weight of polymer.

Example

You can get either x% of diesel or the same % of other estimates using same polymers but you can't crank up more diesel from parts that are asphalt

If you do the same test on an acrylic yarn it has a *very different* result. Acrylic yarn is spun from petroleum-based plastic polymers.

Hello fellow scientists! I use big machines to shoot neutrons at polymers at a research reactor in Munich.

Also, I try to figure out how to explain my work and science in general to people in ways they actually want to hear.

Follow along for #neutron, #science, and #SciComm content ☺️🧪⚛️

Even though we can only use a very small proportion of the world’s left over straw for #strawbuilding , even if we would scale this up to necessary dimensions – simply because there is so much of it – we should still look into how sustainable its cultivation is, both traditional and modern methods.

This could be a good application of plastic-eating bacteria like Ideonella sakaiensis, Engineered E. coil or other microorganisms that have evolved/been engineered to break down synthetic polymers (plastics) & use them as an energy source. 🤷‍♀️ Research needed.

Realistic path:
✅ Green ammonia — now
🔁 E-methanol & CO₂-based chemicals from point sources — this decade
🌬️ DAC-derived polymers — last, as the finishing touch on a circular carbon economy
Synthetic hydrocarbons: from desperate last resort to normal chemical industry. /end
