SINGAPORE – Persons with disabilities (PWDs) will get more support across key life transitions, such as moving from school to employment, with upcoming measures to be rolled out by 2030. Students in special education (SPED) schools, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and polytechnics will be trained in workplace and soft skills and given more work exposure. National disability agency SG Enable will expand its career services with a new Employment Support Office at the Enabling Village in Lengkok Bahru, to help both PWDs and employers navigate employment matters.

Ah yes. I remember the wonderful Polytechnics and their “sandwich courses”. All lost in the University snobbery
October 1, 2026 at 6:05 PM
I agree they were very valuable at what they did best -being polytechnics.

Wasn't the mistake to undermine Polytechnics by rebranding them (second rate) universities?

#r4today
Or did the university sector expand beyond the predictable demand?
It always seemed bonkers to base their business model on never-ending growth.

"Comprehensive education"

I wonder if we could see a return of the polytechnics.

Can trace demise of UK uni's to same period
Thatcher ended polytechnics, turning them into uni's
At time uni's were mainly gov funded, poly's industry funded
One pure, the other applied science, so it made sense
but once polys were gone gov funding for uni's diminished & industry took over

I do wish that the university education = employment skills equation could be quietly, unceremoniously dropped from every opinion piece on universities' futures. In the 4 cases cited below, vocational training existed separately from university first degrees before the polytechnics were vaporised.1/
'It could mean fewer opportunities to study locally. Courses disappearing from particular towns and cities. Less capacity to train the nurses, teachers, engineers, and health professionals the economy needs.'

Thirty-four young people from ITE and the polytechnics are at the 2026 global competition held at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre in Shanghai.

craft projects as a job
- a more technocratic sense perhaps that some people who are trained at universities don't match some vague image of what a university is that therefore maybe they should just be going to polytechnics and "getting rid" of those was maybe a Big Mistake

We need mass research and prototpying of solar powered desalination plants. We need investments in Universities, Polytechnics, and also a series of prizes for organizations, companies, and also for individuals, and a special childrens prizes series for different ages.

Weren’t they Polytechnics then?

Our universities and polytechnics need this kind of union militancy everywhere

"A window is opening for a major national industrial confrontation over the state of education, the likes of which was never experienced by Keir Starmer, but could seriously test Andy Burnham’s government".

It's always *other people's kids* who need a vocational option.

Curious that the aspect of Stalinism that never caught on here was the focus on engineering education in polytechnics and promotion of its graduates to leadership positions.

I think you’re confusing polytechnics and technical colleges. Nobody ever went to poly to learn plumbing.
September 14, 2026 at 8:33 AM
First they take away all the polytechnics so you can't train to be a plumber. Then they take away all the jobs that make you wish you'd trained as a plumber instead.
September 13, 2026 at 8:56 PM
No booze. Also, when they’re talking about how much better polytechnics and trades are I really wanna ask what trade their child is going to go into. But I can’t because my kids go to school with these people’s kids and I have to be civil.
