I was part of several media activist campaigns over decades to secure net neutrality, and can't begin to tell you how destructive this will be to journalism, public health, democracy (+art/popcult,etc)

Net neutrality was crucial BEFORE local news died, before disinformation age.

Now? Holy hell.
A federal appeals court has struck down the FCC’s net neutrality rules that prevented internet service providers from throttling or blocking content or charging more to deliver it

I should just stop looking at reviews for contemporary popcult stuff. The thread has been lost.

Bought OTD in 1972: this was a total game changer - a very effective piece of popcult activism and a great listen. It opened up a whole swathe of 60s US pop that Brits had hardly heard and the sleeve notes offered the word Punk as a way out of early 70s stasis: ‘the relentless middle-finger drive’

I guess its less mask off and that even ostensibly progressive communities are actually fine with sexual abuse if covered up with popcult notions of gender privilege?

me, at college in the 1990s: *listens to professors slag popcult studies, 'lowbrow' literature, comic books, RPGs*

I guess I mostly indicate this because. It's fine to leave something open ended, even if it's very popular.. and has popmedia popcult expectations of formulaic outcome.. where the ending must come with a player's manual, a super guide.
Don't worry.. Bobby Garlic will show you how it's done.

HP got/stayed as popular as it did (as an IP) because it bullseyed a popcult "moment" where it managed to both hit AND face absolutely ZERO meaningful 'resistance' - it was only ever endorsed: Kids liked it, teachers/parents agreed "Hooray kids are reading 'really books!," the movies were solid, etc
If you're wondering why I was asking about fantasy movies, my wife and I, who are not fans of Harry Potter, are trying to figure out if the fact that the Harry Potter movies are basically competent was a huge factor in its longevity because so many fantasy films are weirdly bad

So much of popcult history is bullshit because a lot of academics aren't familiar enough with the material and fans are *too* familiar with it, and together form a symbiotic loop of amplified errors.
Please quote or share your actually unpopular pop culture takes with me, I genuinely love hearing them.
My actually unpopular pop culture opinion is that I never liked Breaking Bad because it’s one of the most popular “middling white guy” power fantasy shows, and I could never get past that.

the poor souls who started following me because of my political rants, not knowing they are a sideline to my main preoccupations of popcult dumpster diving and talking about retrogaming/emulation

Seriously though , the 1970s ended with a three year saturation bombardment of exceptional and groundbreaking popcult shit.

how much of the general adoration of the guy is not putting together the big material/industrial picture of how he's able to make the sort of work he can make. not everybody can do this not bc he's Special, but bc the popcult & industrial spaces he's worked in have become increasingly locked-down
