Could Finnish presidential election become a bit like those second rounds in #France where many united against #LePen? This question became more relevant after #FinnsParty candidate #Hallaaho advanced in recent opinion polls. #farright #populistright @jotfau.bsky.social: www.ku.fi/artikkeli/49...

Professor Quinn Slobodian of @bostonu.bsky.social‬ introduced his latest book at the Institiute this week.
He argues that while the rise of the #PopulistRight in today’s society is often described as a backlash against neoliberalism, it is in fact more of a frontlash.

The rule of law is just something for other people, is it? Disgraceful reactions from the #populistright on the #marinelepen verdict.

However, typically the #populistright (now incl #duplomb / LR) frames this as liberation: LR says farmers are overregulated and punished, & call for rollback of environmental regs. RN calls environmentalism elite urban ideology, pushing for long-term pesticide freedom & national food sovereignty.

Hayek's Bastards: The Neoliberal Roots of the Populist Right
#QuinnSlobodian #Neoliberalism #PopulistRight Was the rise of the populist Right really a reaction to neoliberalism—or was it born from within it? In this thought-provoking talk based on his latest book, Hayek’s Bastards: The Neoliberal Roots of the Populist Right, historian Quinn Slobodian challenges the common view of populism as merely a backlash. Instead, he presents it as a frontlash—a continuation and intensification of neoliberal ideas. From Charles Murray to Javier Milei, Slobodian traces how many of today’s far-right thinkers actually emerged from the heart of the neoliberal tradition, embracing and amplifying its most extreme elements, including social Darwinism and unfettered capitalist competition. 📘 Hayek’s Bastards – Book link: https://press.princeton.edu/books/hardcover/9781890951917/hayeks-bastards 🎤 About the speaker Quinn Slobodian is Professor of International History at Boston University. He is the author or editor of seven books, translated into ten languages, and a regular contributor to The New York Times, The Guardian, and The New York Review of Books. In 2024, Prospect UK named him one of the world’s Top 25 Thinkers. 🎙️ The event is introduced and moderated by Marie-Laure Salles, Director of the Geneva Graduate Institute, and includes a Q&A session with the audience. 🔗 More events from the Geneva Graduate Institute: https://www.graduateinstitute.ch/upcoming-events #HayeksBastards #FarRightPolitics #GenevaGraduateInstitute #PoliticalHistory #InternationalRelations #NewRight #CapitalismCritique
