But we didn't stop there, as we continued past the industrial estate, headed into the nearby town and ended at the small cove at Chiswell.

Cruising out of Portland Harbour in 2021 for #meermittwoch this week, and this is the breakwater fort built on granite around 1870, largely abandoned by 1956, but now Grade II listed.

We're cruising out of a port as sunset approaches, passing by a breakwater and fortification designed to protect it. It's been a very hot day but as the evening has approached and the temperature dropped, so the clouds have started to build up in the sky, casting a thin veil over it and giving the whole scene a subdued feel. The water here is mostly calm and the sea has a definite dark blue green hint to it. The port we've been docked at for the day is to our right and we can just see a bit of the headland cliffs jutting out. Running perpendicular to the shoreline in the distance for a bit there is the low breakwater wall in pale, warm-toned stone. It turns sharply to angle parallel to the coast and as we're passing its opening the wall appears to run diagonally from mid-right in the scene to directly in front of us. At the opening we're passing through the wall forms a wide, circular base on which a circular fort has been constructed. It's all still fairly low compared to our view on the cruise ship towering past and we can see stone and brick buildings curving around in a defensive shape and the filled-in embrasures from which cannons and guns would once have aimed out.

Weather was a lot better time around as you could see the cliffs in the distance further along the coastline. We even had a little spectacle, involving seagulls and cormorants trying to catch fish.

A daily sight on the ferry steps, 20m from Aaran Guesthouse. All day, one would hear the call " 1 hour trip - Portland Harbour" HMS Thumper, a name normally associated with submarines but here, attached to a Navy Patrol Vessel TS Jack Petchey, a Sea Cadet training vessel HMS Magpie, freshly commissioned in 2018, spotted in April 2018 in Weymouth Harbour, before commencing duties in sea survey
