Despite being one of the most visited landmarks in New England, the actual interior of the lighthouse tower is a heavily guarded secret. Because the stairs are steep and dangerous, and the Coast Guard still uses the beacon for active navigation, the public is barred from entering. The town opens the tower doors for just a single day every September (Maine Open Lighthouse Day), allowing only a tiny lottery of lucky visitors to glimpse the view from the top.

Coast Guard Sighting: In the early 2000s, Coast Guard personnel monitoring the area via electronic screens reported seeing a woman walking along the seawall directly behind their colleagues. However, those standing on the seawall could not see her, despite her being clearly visible on the monitors.
