Il portoro è un calcare nero che presenta venature che vanno dal bianco al rosato sino al giallo-oro. Si distinguono due principali varietà: quello a macchia larga e quello a macchia fine. Anticamente esso era chiamato mischio giallo e nero; il nome moderno deriva dal francese Porte d'or.

Assolutamente, ma è anche la conformazione del territorio che non aiuta... certi siti bellissimi (ad es. la villa del Varignano Vecchio, dove c'è un torchio in portoro spettacolare) non sono facili da raggiungere rispetto alle principali vie di comunicazione
