America Is Entering a 'Postliterate' Age

Atlantic story explores the collapse of reading in the US

The US is steadily losing the habit—and capacity—for deep, sustained reading that once shaped everything from individual thinking to democratic life.

The advent of reading transformed society, and its decline will bring about changes of the same magnitude, @rosehorowitch.bsky.social writes. Can America—and civilization—survive the postliterate era?

"The result is essentially insane and postliterate. But it is also pretty much legible for those steeped in online culture. It is coherent incoherence, everything reacting to everything else, all at once."
Not sure how to summarize this one. Wrote about the podcaster-occupied government invading for content, how the algorithmic internet is governed by the logic of reaction videos, and how it has contributed to a very nihilistic illiterate politics and culture of performance for imagined audiences

Text is no longer the medium that we use to spread information or culture—a change that will have “really far-reaching effects,” @rosehorowitch.bsky.social argues. She speaks with @hannarosin.bsky.social about what happens when a society becomes “postliterate”:

“For one thing, in losing or weakening the social pervasiveness of deep reading, we may be placing explosives in the structural foundation of our liberal political order. The postliterate society may also be a postliberal one.”

part of me wonders if part of this is a symptom of our increasingly postliterate society, but naturally a large part of it is garden variety dipshit gutter racism

The poptimists and sloptimists have won. Our new issue, “After Words,” describes our postliterate moment, when everything from serious criticism to literary fiction to children’s books seems on the verge of being replaced by content trash.

The world is not postliterate.

At times, & especially in the reception, a parochial story about US is masquerading as a story about humanity & civilization.

Post-literacy might spread, but that would require it becoming part of a cultural imperialist project, which bring me to my main point.

Great comment by "The Atlantic" staff writer Rose Horowich. "postliterate world". This definitely explains the mass stupidity that has envelopes the U.S., especially our functionally illiterate President.
