Census Bureau statisticians described how the American Community Survey collects income components and computes poverty, noting the ACS samples about 3.5 million addresses annually and produces one-year and five-year estimates for different geographies.

Presenters summarized that ACS covers a broad set of topics with one- and five-year products across many geographies, while SAIPE provides single-year poverty and median household income estimates for all areas (including school districts) using auxiliary data and modeling to reduce volatility.

Amelia Ingram of the Census Bureau said SAIPE produces annual poverty and median household income estimates used in Title I allocations and that 2023 SAIPE estimates were used to distribute more than $18 billion to about 13,000 school districts for FY2025–26.
