Watterson sent his friend Berke Breathed, creator of Bloom County, this comic making fun of him for merchandising the hell out of his comics to pay for powerboats. (The commentary here is Breathed’s)

Una polémica de BGG que demuestra como esta creciendo el mercado de los juegos. Al parecer una nueva compañía ha sacado un juego que es un copia de la mecánica básica del powerboats

*PowerBoats*/*PowerShips* >>> *Joyride* | Joyride: Survival of the Fastest
It has all the Powerboats movement rules, except in case of damage (which normally doesn't happen in Powerboats). The last email about the Powerboats contract I got 23 September 2019 from Duncan Mollo...

Also let us not forget the real winners from this change: people who own powerboats and jetskis

The mountains where my family's former cabin is have been overrun with rich elitists. Where there once was pure wilderness is now filled with McMansions, and the lake is so full of powerboats it's hard to do troll fishing.

Nine Tax Cuts were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else, desire powerboats. But they were all of them deceived

Hydro Thunder
(Multiplatform - 1999/2000)

The premise: rocket-fueled powerboats going crazy fast in an arcade racer.

What more do you need? 🌊🚀

That sea lane - powerboats or back to sail?
September 18, 2026 at 4:12 AM
oh, and if joyride owes powerboats money, powerboats probably owes formula d money, because no game arrives in the world without inspiration from somewhere.

The more i read, the more I'm leaning one way.

I’m on page 5 of the BGG thread where the designer of Powerboats calls out the “designer” of Joyride for plagiarizing his game. What bothers me most so far are the folks chiming in to defend the Joyride guy just because they own that game. Infuriating.

Unironically they are *so good* at this kind of op. They can deploy fast powerboats from underneath helicopters and stuff. They will be chomping at the bit here.

Packard Merlins in powerboats was a big one, IIRC.

unlike a lot of people who're expressing their opinions about Powerboats and Joyride's similarities on BGG, I've actually played Powerboats

gonna be real, while their core movement mechanism is similar, it's also similar to every other game where racers can shift gears

Looks to be the case:

"While most categories of new powerboats saw estimated unit declines in 2023, anywhere from 5-25%..."

Well we used to own them, for starters. They were made in the US by people who earned a living wage. And they came with support. YUGE paper manuals. Oregon Trail. Also we could meet our friends at the airport gate, leave work at 5, and unironically listen to Van Halen on powerboats. Sigh.

Sailboats got sails. Powerboats got power. Paddleboats got paddles. So you tell me...what's up with kayaks?

So it's like one of them racing powerboats

It might not count but there’s Fodor’s “I hate relativism. I hate relativism more than I hate anything else, excepting, maybe, fiberglass powerboats… surely, surely, no one but a relativist would drive a fiberglass powerboat.”

Now as for the recent powerboats controversy. Seems to me that yes, there is a clear inspiration from powerboats to joyride. But the amount of work and the differences in the games are significant.

This isn't piracy, it's just how games are designed and how they have always been 11/12
