so. 9/11/06 is the first memorial comic. They all go like this for a while (more notes in alt text)
sluggo and nancy pray at an idolotrous altar they have created in the image of the twin towers sluggo, nancy, and fritzi bow their heads while looking at a flag at half mast. God, presumably, booms out in the heavens that "We Remember" Aunt fritzi's silhouette prays in front of, bizarrely, the french flag? And Guy Gilchrist offers a prayerpoem: as each year fades into the last--- as time keeps marching along--- as the spotlight fades--- and the memories begin to not be as vivid--as-astrong-- we all struggle in intensely private ways-- with all that's happened, that day, and since-- I know how *I* struggle to find some peace When so much never made any sense--- But, I *know* I'm not *alone* in all these Emotions that I feel--- The Pain that still burns in my broken heart-- Each tear I still cry is still real--- So--I still must pause--this day--every year-- And look to the heavens---and pray--- Yes. I pray. And remember. It's signed Guy Gilchrist immediately after, but it's unclear if this is his voice, or if this is Aunt Fritzi's Conservative Blog (from what I've seen of Gilchrist's work, Fritzi spends most of her time blogging about how much Jesus loves the Heroes of World War II) fritzi praying again, this time in front of a goblin-green background. She thinks about how she skips church a lot, but never on 9/11, which i guess is a kind of holy day of obligation for american protestants. From the first panel to the second, she enters darkness, which I guess symbolizes her reckoning with the Problem of Evil, the possibility of God's nonexistence, and the resulting despair she might feel. Or maybe just like a cloud passed overhead or something. Her prayer: I life life day to day... This column* to fill.... With dreams, laughs.... and mountains made of my foolish molehills. I don't know. I get "caught up"... maybe You do, too. Maybe Even skip a worship Service or two. Then...comes THIS date. 11. September. [next panel] My heart stops a tear. Starts. I pause. It was a sunny day... Remember? Then, I Just drop to my knees... And ask again to our Father above... . Please comfort, Bless us... Protect Us all... with The miracle of your Infinite Love *maybe her literal column on her blog? Who can say
