Halfway across the world (and a few hundred years earlier) dolls were also playing an important role in Mesoamerica. These articulated ceramic figurines were probably not toys, however, instead likely used in ritual 'puppet shows'

Maya drawing page

Based on various Maya vase drawings, murals, and figurines. Apart from the mural from San Bartolo (which is Late Preclassic), they're all from the Late Classic period.

You can see my new artworks one month early.

Ancient figurines unearthed in El Salvador suggest a rich ritual tradition. Were they puppets in mythological reenactments? This discovery challenges old views of Mesoamerican history. @antiquityj.bsky.social #Archaeology #Mesoamerica #ElSalvador #Preclassic #AncientArt

🏺 Archaeologists of the Univ of Warsaw found 5 clay figurines on the top of a pyramid in San Isidro, El Salvador, buried c.400 BCE. The figurines have holes on the top of their heads and necks allowing them to turn them side to side. Researchers suggested they are puppets or marionettelike figures

Atop a pyramid in Preclassic El Salvador, researchers unearthed these ceramic 'puppets'. With expressive faces and articulated heads, they were possibly used in ritual performances and indicate long-distance connections in pre-Columbian Central America.
