Welcome back to Print 101! Today we’re diving into the core elements of color theory starting with Hue. 🎨

Hue is simply the name given to a pure color, determined by light wavelength and mapped as a specific direction on the color wheel!

#Print101: Shifting from petroleum to organic plant-based solvents!

Soy/vegetable inks are eco-friendly, but a longer curing process means they still release some VOCs as they dry. Need a faster workflow? UV-curable soy inks offer a cleaner alternative.

📚 Print 101: Document Layout! Let's talk Crossovers/Spreads!

This is when art or images span from one page to the opposite page, crossing over the gutter (that inner margin!). Seen often in mags & books for impact. Needs precision printing!

Print 101: Slug

Slug is the extra canvas outside your bleed where you stash metadata—file names, dates, version notes, contacts—so printers have what they need without cluttering your design.

➡️ InDesign: enable under “Slug” in new-doc setup
➡️ Size: ~0.25″–0.5″
➡️ Use 8–10 pt for clarity

Print 101: The Press Check

Screens can lie, but the press doesn't! A press check lets you inspect a live sheet right off the run. Once you sign it, that sheet becomes the operator's master guide for the rest of the project. Total color consistency unlocked.

Print 101: Creep 📖

Ever notice inner pages "shaving off" in a thick booklet? That’s Creep. In prepress, we adjust your margins so everything stays perfectly aligned from the first page to the last. ✨

Welcome back to Print 101! Today we’re diving into Latex Ink.

These pigmented, water-based inks use a water-dispersed polymer (latex) to apply rich color and protect the substrate. They are typically used in wide-format jobs across a variety of materials!

Why wait for ink to dry? UV curable inks use a flash of ultraviolet light to harden instantly on the press.

This process eliminates dangerous solvent evaporation, cuts dot-gain for sharper images, and works perfectly on non-paper substrates.

Welcome to a new chapter of Print 101: Color! 🎨

Matching digital design to ink on paper is one of printing's biggest challenges. Screens emit light, while paper reflects it, making basic color management key to achieving your vision.

Welcome back to #Print101! We’re nearing the end of our Types of Ink section with today's term: Viscosity. 💧

Viscosity measures a fluid’s resistance to flow. Getting ink thickness right ensures it moves smoothly through the press and onto paper!

Why are solids in printing so impactful?

Solids give you 100% ink coverage, unlike screen tints that use halftone patterns for lighter shades. This means max color saturation! Curious about more print secrets? Stay tuned!

Welcome back to Print 101! Today we're looking at another essential ink term: Coverage.

Ink coverage refers to the extent to which ink covers the surface of a substrate, typically categorized as light, medium, or heavy across your sheet!

Welcome back to Print 101! Today we continue with ink related terms: Flood (or Flooding).

This refers to printing or coating a sheet with ink, varnish, or protective coating that covers the entire page, delivering seamless edge-to-edge finish!

Print 101 is back! Today’s topic is Dye Ink.

Dye inks are standard for inkjet printers. They are water-soluble, have a longer dry time and low UV resistance, making them ideal for vibrant indoor prints, but not outdoor products!

Print 101 is back! Today we are looking at Liquid Toner (ElectroInk). 💧

Similar to dry toner, this method introduces water or other solvents to the pigment particles to more closely resemble traditional offset ink quality.

Welcome back to Print 101! Today we’re looking at Toner.

Typically used by copiers or laser printers, toner is an electrically charged powder that adheres to the substrate or plate using an opposing electrical charge.

Traditional ink dries by soaking into paper, which can make colors look dull on uncoated sheets.

UV curable ink hardens instantly under light before it can sink. You get the rich texture of uncoated paper with the vibrant color of a coated sheet.

Print 101: Conventional Inks

Highly versatile and cost-effective, conventional inks are a printing staple.

They utilize evaporating solvents to speed up drying times and drive deep pigment penetration across many different paper stocks.

Print 101: What is a solvent? 🧪💧

Pigments provide the color, but solvents act as the liquid binder that transfers them to the paper.

By adjusting the solvent blend, press teams control drying speed, ink flow, and cost efficiency for a flawless run.

Does UV ink need a top coat?

Unlike regular inks, UV inks cure instantly & are more resistant to scratching & marking. An aqueous coating is only added for a specific finish, like high-gloss or ultra-matte.
