Last time we built the portfolio. Now the part almost everyone skips: actually getting it seen. Because your portfolio is not the whole thing. It's the tip of the iceberg.

You get it in front of people two ways: you go to them, and you go where they're already looking.

I've reviewed portfolios for over fifteen years. I get them every year from students applying to my program, and I've built websites since before I even worked in theatre. So here's what makes me stay on a portfolio, and what makes me click away.

A student asked me today how to start working internationally. I could see what they were picturing: a portfolio so impressive that some theatre across the world just has to say yes.

The border between you and the world was never your work.

How do you build a career when nobody knows your name? No reputation, no network, no one to vouch for you, and a field that feels like everyone already knows each other. I know that feeling exactly, because I've started from zero not once, but twice.

Lately I keep seeing the same argument online: theatre is just too expensive now. Tickets are out of control. And I get it, they are high. But here's what almost no one in that audience knows: the ticket price isn't the problem. The ticket barely covers anything.

How do you land your first design gig? Everybody thinks the answer is a great portfolio and a lot of applications. That's part of it. But here's what nobody tells you: your first design job almost never comes from a stranger reading your resume.

Here's something I give my first-year grad students before any design exercise. It's called The Artist Date, from Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way.

We tend to think of creativity as a faucet. Turn it on, it flows, you make the work. But it's not a faucet. It's a well.

Is a theatre degree worth it? Everyone treats this like a yes or no question. It's neither.

Here's what people get wrong. They think of the degree like a receipt. Pay tuition, get a job. But nobody in this field hires you for the paper.

I spent all summer telling myself I'd record again soon. Turns out "soon" is where a lot of things go to hide. So here's me, back, talking about the fear nobody warns you about at the start of a new semester, and why I think you're more ready than you feel.

Making mistakes means things are happening. Playing it safe means nothing is.

On this day in 1984, Bruce Springsteen released Born in the U.S.A. This Mother's Day, I'm thinking about our stage mothers—the women and mentors who brought us into performing arts. The teachers who stayed late. The directors who took a chance. The designers who showed us the ropes.

Who's your stage mother?

"The path is never clear. But you have been doing the work."
To every theatre student stepping into this field right now: it's go time. Embrace uncertainty. Show your work. Say yes to the conversations you did not expect.

"Reach out to your heroes."
One day you will be someone else's, and you will want them to reach out to you. This morning, one of mine said yes.

Doing the work is one thing. Understanding why you do it is another.
Turns out a tenure file is an unexpected invitation to reflect. There is more method to the madness than you think.

On this day in 1978 The Police released 'Roxanne' as a single in the UK. It’s often mistaken for a love song; in reality it’s a direct, street-level plea set to punk-meets-reggae rhythms. #Roxanne #ThePolice #OutlandosDAmour #70sPostPunk #PunkReggae #VinylHunters #MusicHistory #ProductionNotes
