How do we fix education?

Depends.

How serious are we?

Here’s our first checkpoint.

Get rid of grades.

The second checkpoint?

We’ll never get there.

We can do better.

Better Assessment.

My next steps.

Proudly playing school for 31 years.

Thought I’d give sarcasm a spin this morning.

Someday, maybe, I’ll find the right button to push to better education.

We can do better.

Kids can (and always could) learn without grades.

Problem is (by our own hands) we can’t seem to teach without them.

Not convinced?

Imagine teaching without grades.

Yep.

We did this.

We can do better.

Why not?

Think of all that hasn’t worked, all that isn’t working.

Or, even better, all that you think might.

Nothing has been fully figured out in education, especially grading, so go for it.

Dare different.

Brave better.

ED.

At some point kids come to realize they’ve been sortED.

And, then, we wonder why they’re so disillusionED.

Maybe if we’d prioritizED learning, instead of grading, they’d have been supportED.

And their story changED.

SupportED.

Not sortED.

Better EducatED.

Teaching’s hard right now.

Maybe harder than ever.

And, yeah, we could argue that.

And, yeah, we could point fingers everywhere.

Or (just a thought)

WE COULD QUIT DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER

…and over.

Yeah, we can do better.

Yeah, I suppose, I do.

I do say some off-the-wall things about how we might better education.

But, I figure…

All in all, it’s another brick off the wall.

We built it.

We can break it.

And, we can rebuild it better. #Project180

“I’m just trying to figure it out.”

If you can say it, mean it, live it, then you are heading in the right direction.

The only ones who think it’s not are those who likely think they have figured it out.

And it is they who are lost.

Brave Better.

There’s getting through the content.

And there’s getting through to kids.

Or.

There’s teaching.

And there’s learning.

The difference is the difference.

We can do better.

I suspect some people think I think I’m a really good teacher.

If they only knew me.

For, if they did, they’d know I am simply a teacher who believes he can be (has to
be) a better teacher.

One day at a time.

Better.

“We need to get serious about education in this country.”

“Serious.”

Maybe that’s the problem.

Maybe we need to be a little less serious.

We’re just humans teaching humans.

Let’s learn.

Let’s live.

Together.

We can (less) seriously do better.

All will learn.

Each will learn.

The folly in the former.

The wisdom in the latter.

We can do better.

How important is learning?

Time is the tell.

The time we give it (or don’t) tells the truth.

We can do better.

Tomorrow, too.

Seems, better’s

All I can do.

We’ll never get better from others, if we don’t want better for others.

We must evolve.

We. Together. Us.

We can do better.

Instead of, “They gave me a grade.”

I dream of an educational existence where kids say, “They gave me feedback and another opportunity.”

Are we sorting or supporting?

We can do better.

Are you better than you were?

Will you be better than you are?

Then you’re a good teacher.

Actually, you’re a great teacher.

Do. Reflect. Do Better.

Yes.

Yes, it would look different.

Drastically different.

If we could reboot education.

We can do better.

Boring.

Can we not get a little jiggy with it?

Education reform.

Tired of the same old answers to the age old question.

How do we make education better?

Let’s break out of our box.

Not like we got much to lose.

We can do better.

Compliance.

Commitment.

Teacher-centered.

Learner-centered.

Control.

Freedom.

Artificial.

Authentic.

We can do better.

The majority of my 30 year career has happened during the Age of Data.

What’s the biggest difference I now see 30 years later?

We have more data.

Are kids learning better?

Are teachers teaching better?

We have more data.

We can do better.

At year 20, I had to get gone or get better.

So, I gave every kid an “A”
on the first day—for the rest of the year.

I turned things upside down to find better.

I didn’t find it in a spreadsheet.

Anything I’ve learned about teaching and learning over my 30 year career has only come from one place.

In the classroom, face to face.

With kids.

The trees in the forest.

We can do better.

Becoming a better teacher meant letting go of becoming a good teacher in (as) the end.

There’s no end.

We never get good.

Only better.

Do. Reflect. Do Better.
