A stunning full solar disk showcasing intricate details of the Sun's surface. Prominences of plasma arc outward, while dark sunspots speckle the surface, revealing the dynamic and captivating nature of our closest star.

Mind-blowing shot by astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy 😍

He took 1.7 million photos over 6 days just to catch this commercial jet perfectly transiting the sun with solar prominences floating at the exact moment.

"This time lapse is over the course of 1 hour compressed down into seconds.
Super heated plasma is held in place, high above the chromosphere of the sun. Magnetically locked into place by unseen forces, waiting to be released."

Solar disk imaged 29 August at 11:54 from Edinburgh. Image taken in hydrogen-alpha using a Coronado SolarMax 🔭. There's lots of activity - sunspot groups (also visible in white light), filaments, and prominences. Best 25% frames from 2500 frame video. #astrophotography, #heliophysics

A very kind colleague at work loaned me their TAL100RS Stage 2 modded h-alpha scope, after waiting several weeks for sunshine I finally captured some solar action, here is one of my shots earlier this year of some prominences. So much fun ☀️ #astrophotography #astrophoto #sun

The Sun this Wednesday afternoon (9-24-25) here in Oregon in hydrogen alpha, showing the chromosphere. The first image is in color, the second with a monochrome filter which I feel brings out more detail. I used a 40mm aperture solar telescope and iPhone 15+ProCam #Sun #astronomy #astrophotography
