#Prop13
why are realtors pro prop13? doesn't it decrease turnover?

I mean my idea was to use the Prop13 difference between paid and current tax value and raise transit tax on those that paid the least. Some people are just not pulling their weight

Everyday I discover new versions of Prop13.
Washington has an utterly insane provision in its constitution saying that cities can only increase property taxes by 1% a year, and predictably, a bunch of cities are going broke.
When even wealthy towns like Clyde Hill are going broke
Clyde Hill on the Eastside’s tony Gold Coast is the latest to find that its local government is going bankrupt. Something is very off in the way WA is doing this.

Check out the annual property tax bill paid by the Chevron in the lower right corner, versus the tax bills and home values of the houses in the upper left corner.

If you're wondering how it is that 3 neighbors with similar homes values could pay $2K, $10K, and $28K... well... that's #Prop13

Yup. Here in #CA, Prop13 (supported by RReagan) literally stripped funding out of public education (K-College). This happened in ‘78—ten yrs after #CA stood up low-cost QUALITY pub ed systems funded by residential + commercial Property Taxes. The GOP was all, “We don’t want EDUCATED Minorities.”

I think that’s true of a lot of California public services. I would love to see more graphs with Prop13 labeled on it, although there have been a lot of budget gimics to cover up its effects over the years

Translation: it’s listed for 5x the #Prop13 valuation, and it’ll probably go for 50% more.

$790??? They must have been holding onto that house literally since prop13 passed Jesus

I'm pretty sure every YIMBY that matters wants prop13 nuked

counter proposal:

we should tsar bomba prop13 from orbit and see how things settle a few years later
0% state income tax for California families making under $100,000. That’s thousands of dollars back in your pocket where it belongs.

As Governor, I’ll work the issue at both ends—lowering taxes for those who are struggling and raising them on the biggest corporations that can afford to pay.

people love to talk about 1968 in California but this is the first time I pegged prop13 to the backlash...in 1978. eye opening.

Fun episode. From a BC perspective, land value taxes would be relatively easy to implement. But the bigger obstacle is that Vancouver property taxes are really low.

For comparison, the effective tax rate here is comparable to that of a home bought in the 70s and protected by Prop13 in California.

Prop13 repeal is basically impossible right.

Hey which one of you runs prop13.wtf?

Here's another fun link and screenshot to include about Howard Jarvis!

"Jarvis also noted that education should not be funded by taxpayers"

this single family lot will end up having a tax assessment increase of at least 40x in 5 years. Yay #Prop13.

OK but so:

Oil companies tried in 2010 to kill off the C&T program via state ballot initiative (Prop 23, so named bc it was the reverse of AB 32). They failed.

But on the same ballot, they *did* pass Prop 26 (so named bc it doubled down on CA's disastrous Prop13)

In #CA, we’ve suffered 35 page ballots, and since #Prop13 we've been in sore need of civics education and since the late '90s we've lost face-to-face campaigning.

#Education is key to a working #Democracy.

It all stems from prop13, the pinnacle of unintentional consequences and now a sacred cow in CA politics
August 20, 2026 at 10:43 PM
Opposing anything that might lead to the end of prop13

Prop13 need to be repealed from residential protection even more than commercial. At least commercial drives income tax and sales tax.

Older because of wealth, and because turnover in the area is low, due to public awareness of the geology situation, and benefits of prop13 trust mechanisms.

It is genuinely kinda *heartening* how a lot of Reddit leftists are super protective of the elderly essentially screwing then over through stuff like generous pensions and Prop13 transferring tax burden from old to young.

I mean good for them for caring about the elderly I guess.

Prop13 should never have been for vacant or corporate or inherited homes.
