@ascalaphid.com has tipped me off to even more weird beetles. some big-hands weirdo called doubledeya, cleft-head beetle, SE asian whirligig, and jugular-horned beetle.
cartoon drawings based on four real genera of beetles. Doubledeya is brown with a rectangular body and very large hands and antennae, Eupompha has an alternating split on its head and body with red on one side and green on the other. Porrorhynchus has a yellow face on a shiny black body with large yellow forelegs. Prostomis is rectangular and mostly red with large mandibles and very tiny arms and legs.
