No one hates free markets more than capitalists. Protectionism and monopoly is the goal that is always strived for.

Like, I get that theres some argument for price protectionism on the basis of labor cost and state subsidy but that isnt...banning them entirely.

fantasy, fanboys AND massive protectionism. Open up the US to Chinese EVs and Tesla is cactus.
Everyone knows it.

"We want to conquer the entire Mediterranean, so we need loads of tanks, aircraft and warships.

Our first step was to do a protectionism, so now we can't afford gas. Victory is surely imminent!"

Because protectionism totally works and is not at all a one way ticket to graft, price gouging and stagnation! Funny how the muscular high-T god-kings of capitalism seem to hate and fear actually having to *participate* in the free market instead of just using the concept as an ideological cudgel 🤔

Next level food protectionism!

Basically protectionism, but through war instead of tariffs.
"The Iran war has been very lucrative for American oil companies, which have earned more than $130 billion in profit as people pay much higher prices for gasoline and diesel.

These companies earned less than $47 billion collectively during the same period in 2025"

U.S. Oil Industry Earned Over $130 Billion in Profit During Iran War
That was almost three times as much as what businesses producing and refining oil in the United States made in the same period in 2025.

And free trade.

Protectionism is economic suicide, and severing economic ties hurts the poorest and least powerful the most.

US automakers have been lazy due to protectionism for decades. US cars are terrible.

Ban Chinese cars, fine. Lift the restrictions on rest of world vehicles.

we love a free market with a side of stifling protectionism that maintains consumers as captive buyers!

Protectionism is a decades-old practice for the US auto industry. It’s just not been this naked before.

I don't think I'd use it quite as broadly as just "reactionary movement with protectionism" but I think in America at least, those components run a lot deeper given what they're reactionary *towards* and what that protectionism is comprised of.

Free markets my ass, protectionism hampers innovation from competition, which has been the States ways especially with automobiles and oil.

What? You’re really missing the point. What Merz has agreed with Macron on cars is Germany backing French protectionism! And then when some in Asia are offended, Merz has forgotten what he gave the French a fortnight ago!

I am tired of being fucked by protectionism.

Trump's trade strategy promised a smaller deficit, but delivered only supply chain disruption and zero structural fix. Protectionism cannot correct deep economic imbalances.
