Lots of options were out of stock and the price is horrible these days, but I went ahead and picked up a protectli.

Reminder: OpenBSD is incredible for security and super easy to setup as network perimeter devices, like firewalls

it sounds like GLM 5.3 will never say no if you wanna hack the planet, so now is the time to build yourself a very secure new firewall!

works great w protectli gear too!

I suddenly find myself with two barely used Protectli fanless machines after attending the art show of a bike mechanic pal¹, and I think that's my physical NetBSD desktop machine question sorted

¹: ...look, the world is a complex and beautifully unexpected place

Is that a protectli? I have one of those!

I have a 4 port protectli and after the long setup, the thing doesn't quit!
During lockdown I spent a lot of money on an awful Netgear router that has failed me ever since. Thanks to affordable networking equipment and open source software, I no longer live like that and neither do you. For @aftermath.site aftermath.site/opnsense-pro...

Cudy P5 with a clear mobile SIM 170mbps, (previous 20Mbps with sky)

Added the long idle Protectli Vault with pfsense and an ubiquiti nano AP

It's a good awful wired mess but works

P5 needs to be near a window which isn't ideal, but it'll do for now, I might look at an external antenna eventually
In a desperate attempt to see if I can get better internet speeds I signed up for a 5g sim only plan and bought a 5g router (cudy p5)

Desperate times and measures and all that.

It does give me the chance to configure the protectli vault I got ages ago 😳

ProtectLI?

You are more often than not better off investing 600$ in a standalone access point and a small firewall appliance (protectli/qotom), installing OPNSense, and calling it a day.

Way more secure, flexible and long lasting than consumer grade hardware whose goal is just to make a quick buck.

A used Protectli box… much faster than a raspberry pi but still pretty slow

Nice. Protectli is already on my list- I was hoping to find something a little less expensive, but at least that's one more vote for it.

I've definitely caught the travel router (mobile homelab?) bug! This is a Protectli running Proxmox with a virtualised OpenWRT hooked up to a 5G modem. Having a lot of fun with this one!

Currently having a lot of fun with virtualised OpenWRT on a @protectli VP2430.

numinit, Morgan, is an awesome guy. I've used his mesh network which runs off Protectli boxes and it works great.

Today's goal. Replace my HUNSN firewall appliance that I put together in 2023 that has a drive/drive controller going bad and has no after market support because... what's HUNSN?

Going in is a Protectli V1610 appliance. Should be a straighforward swap and export/import configuration. 🤞

The device itself is very light and compact, but works equally as well as my last Protectli box

I was also able to migrate my network controller to it with no issue. It is only single site though, so now I have a controller for friends and family (they use my controller over Tailscale), and one […]
