If I'm going to pick one noir that you might not have seen, I'm going with "Fury" (1936), a proto-noir from Fritz Lang and starring Spencer Tracy, because it speaks to today's issues as well as of its own time.

Needless to say I love this proto-noir. And Jean Brooks in this wig😍🖤

One more Hammer video intro from me tonight at the Science and Media Museum in Bradford tonight - this time it's for Terence Fisher's proto surgical horror thriller Stolen Face. share.google/TOgawDTIr1cJ...
Stolen Face (PG) + intro | National Science and Media Museum
Film noir femme fatale Lizabeth Scott gives a searing performance in this macabre melodrama that offers a dark twist on the Pygmalion myth.

Alexis Alexiou: “Greek society continues to be deeply sexist”
The photographic representation of the area is shocking and revealing. An off-season beach resort, abandoned houses, shacks, streams, garbage, images that invade the psyche of the heroes and heroines of the new neo-noir his film Alexis Alexiou ("History 52", "Wednesday 04:45"), at the same time amazing shots like seascapes of Volanaki and the muffled motif of an iconic song from a distant proto-tourist Greece.

One I’d add to Kwaidan and the amazing list in the comments is horror noir (and proto-slasher) The Spiral Staircase.

(I’m on a roll!)

Lord of Illusions, Clive Barker’s own foray into urban fantasy and cosmic horror-inflected noir that was all the rage in the 90s.

Stars Scott Freaking Bakula as a grizzled proto-Harry Dresden.

Another throwback! Two years ago today I posted abt "The Mystery of Woman," a rare Cornell Woolrich opinion piece from LADIES' HOME JOURNAL (July 1944), that solidified him as a feminist-leaning author for me. (If I ever collect my Woolrich reviews/essays, this will no doubt be the opener.) #noir
“The Mystery of Woman”: Cornell Woolrich as a proto-feminist author.
I take the viewpoint that women have been labeled mysterious simply because they so often fail to conform to the pattern of behavior that men have set for them.  She just did something he didn’t li…

Basically, Inception if it was good and not techno-colonial neo-futurism in space and Nolan could convey even the simulacra of love

Also, how different would Gilbert’s career have been if the sweaty, gritty, proto-desert noir DESERT NIGHTS had been his sound debut instead of HIS GLORIOUS NIGHT?

Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart are featured in a publicity photo for 1937 proto-noir Marked Woman.

One of my favorite early role of today's #SUTS honoree Bette Davis came in Michael Curtiz's noir (or "proto-noir") 20,000 Years in Sing Sing, opposite Spencer Tracy. Released in 1932.

Right. Like, Black Canary is the last true major Golden Age character since she debuts in 1947 and is in the older traditions of noir/screwball-inspired characters, then Captain Comet/J'onn are proto-Silver Age/"Atomic Age" (1950s, sci-fi B-movie inspiration), then Barry kicks off the Silver Age.

Early Hitchcock is so underrated. If you dig this, check out The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) for more proto-noir thrills with that signature Hitch tension
