#Pryce-#Jones
In the last couple of weeks David Pryce-Jones and Tom Stoppard, born a year apart in 1936 and 1937 in Vienna, have died in Great Britain. One can't help but think, as Jay Nordlinger remarked in the NYTimes obit of Pryce-Jones: "There aren't people like that anymore."

I like this remark by Daniel Johnson on the late David Pryce-Jones, 1936-2025.

“He was a man of the right, but he was quite broad in his social circle, as long as he didn’t feel you were betraying the deep values of Western civilization.”

"Core tenet" has become a cliché, like "fatal flaw" and "grievous error" (David Pryce-Jones warned me against those). May I suggest to my fellow English-speakers that tenets are, in fact, core, making them tenets?

"The Incomparable David Pryce-Jones: A eulogy." The funeral was held in a small church in the Welsh hills. I tried to do this man a dollop of justice. www.jaynordlinger.com/p/the-incomp...

He's not kidding about this having an absurdly good cast: Ben Kingsley, Jenny Agutter, Brian Blessed, Michael Hordern, Jonathan Pryce. The main character's aunt has her speaking voice played by BILLIE WHITELAW and her singing voice by GRACE JONES.
Just found a cartoon I saw as a little’n and had vaguely fond memories of; a Bond spoof about a frog secret agent. Gave it a go and… blimey, I don’t remember the lengthy, bonkers, backstory. The rest is also total shit, despite an absurdly good cast, so there’s another happy childhood memory dashed.

One thing that I can imagine that Lizard couldn't is the "what comes next," which is, in a way, a return to th eold ways of mail-order. Ellen L Demorest began distributing paper patterns by mail in the 1840s, & in 1850, Pryce Pryce-Jones basically invented the mail-order catalog to sell...fabric.
Ok, so that's my play-by-play. This was amazing. I love the final note about the importance of small, local, accessible craft & fabric & yarn stores. RIP JoAnns. Long live the creative folks who remain.

A professor of mine once said about a professor of his own, “He gave me what I can only call a cast of mind.” David Pryce-Jones has done something similar for me. I have written about P-J and a novel of his, just republished by Tivoli Books. www.jaynordlinger.com/p/master-wri...

Yesterday's visit to Newtown with @janettem34.bsky.social for my 200th ParkRun and Pryce Jones exhibitions (our main motivations, respectively) produced an unexpected patch of what I take to be Artemisia verlotiorum, Chinese Mugwort, by the R Severn above a shingle bar. #wildflowerhour #ParkRun

David Pryce-Jones has written a great range of books: histories, biographies, memoirs, etc. His outstanding novel "The Afternoon Sun" has now been republished. Deft, haunting, powerful book. From me, a personal appreciation of the author. www.jaynordlinger.com/p/master-wri...

Alan Pryce-Jones, best known for editing the Time Literary Supplement from 1948 to 1959, was a precocious 28 when he published what he called a commonplace book but what today would more likely be labelled a biblio-memoir: Private Opinion (1936)

I once dedicated a book as follows: "To David Pryce-Jones, an exemplary thinker, writer, and friend." He was born in Vienna in 1936 -- two years before the Anschluss. He survived and led the richest of lives. He passed away yesterday. I, along with many others, am ever grateful.

And fight we will.
What is evil’s primary noun? Hannah Arendt tells us it’s banality. David Pryce-Jones says frivolity. I saw an abundance of both—with good lashings of idiocy and dead-eyed antipathy—everywhere I turned.

The Formula One paddock arrived in mourning, following the deaths of Tom Pryce at the South African Grand Prix and Carlos Pace in a light aircraft crash near Sao Paulo. The Shadow team signed Alan Jones as Pryce’s replacement, while Hans-Joachim Stuck took Pace’s place at Brabham.
