Theory allows neutron stars to spin more than 1,000 times per second. Yet after more than 40 years of searching, no such pulsar has ever been found. Where are the sub-millisecond pulsars — and could the way nature makes them explain their absence? go.nature.com/4z9wNH3 🔭

The structure of this roof cap is exactly like the kind of telemetry tracker that NASA uses to identify dead pulsars in deep space.

We call them spider pulsars because like Earth's arachnids, they are 'eating' (more like ablating) their companions. 🕷️

We have two main types:

Black Widow Pulsars
Redback Pulsars

These are the nastiest of them all.

I wonder how many people would start a chat about the band Joy Division instead of pulsars 🙃

Would often get asked:

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"

"I wanna be an astronomer who looks at pulsars"

Grew up ✅

Became a pulsar astronomer ✅

It’s amazing (& wonderful) to me how shocked students are today when I relate the story of the discovery of pulsars & Dame Prof. Bell-Burnell’s exclusion from the Nobel. Even for students well aware of the reality of misogyny in our societies, they’re floored by what happened.

The kids are alright.
Great to see that Dame Prof. Jocelyn Bell Burnell is still being recognised and awarded for changing our view of the Universe!

Apologies: Prof. Bell-Burnell was a graduate student when she discovered pulsars

That is still incredible

Living around a pulsar would def. be scary for anyone not wearing SBF 3 million+ sunblock.

Pulsars emit a lot of high-energy radiation, so they would destroy atmospheres quickly.

They also blast out the powerful pulsar wind, which literally shreds their companions.

But, thankfully, pulsar planets are rare -- only a handful of pulsar planets are known to date.

We think this is because formation scenarios are rare and survival rates are low.

But we don't have firm answers yet.

Based on the rarity of pulsars, it sounds a lot like how the first exoplanets were found around them. I think this analogy could go far lol

the key notch positions on ddr4 and ddr5 dimms are governed by the U(1) group and are stable up to extremely high energies. scintillation traces from dimms emitted by pulsars seem to show ddr5 decaying into 1 ddr4 and 2 ddr3; some scientists think these are not dimm traces but lpcamm2

And pulsar-specific ones:

- Handbook of Pulsar Astronomy by Duncan Lorimer and Michael Kramer (what we call the pulsar Bible!)

- Pulsar Astronomy by Andrew Lyne and Francis Graham-Smith (also very good)

- Rotation and Accretion Powered Pulsars by Pranab Ghosh

Also, as a note, considering eezo usually forms on planets being impacted by the gravity waves produced by supernovas, and usually are found in chunks of asteroids orbiting PULSARS, this makes the astrographic history of the Asari homeworld DEEPLY curious to me

Extraterrestrial detection inspired by firefly communications could distinguish alien signals from pulsars
When we think of extraterrestrial intelligence that might be out there among the stars, we tend to think of creatures not too unlike us, though maybe with gray skin, probably bald and with big black eyes.

Wrapped up a really podcast with @startswithabang.bsky.social talking all
the fun things we know about pulsars, profile change events, and even the things we are still trying to learn about them!

Pod should be out in the not too distant future (a couple of weeks) — thanks for a great chat, Ethan!

@jfmezei I think this mostly matters for pulsars? All the astronomers I know who care about this level of precision are very happy leap seconds are going away, as that caused more problems for them.
