Dear Diary, As we were entering the VIP area of the Ramones 50th Anniversary Tribute at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, so was Billy Zoom, the guitarist of the legendary Los Angeles punk band X. When Mr. Zoom noticed that he and I were wearing the same OG Ramones t-shirt, the rockstar said to me before shaking my hand, “Cool fashion.” To which I replied probably too quickly, “I’m a really big fan.” Mr. Zoom then gave me a squinty cowboy glare and whispered Clint Eastwood-ly, “ “Well, you don’t look so big to me.” Billy Zoom. Dear Diary, I think our favorite part of the amazing Ramones 50th Anniversary Tribute at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery had to be when Billy Idol joined the Cretin Family onstage for a few songs to close out the incredible show. We died and went to heaven. That Linda Ramone sure knows how to throw a party. Linda Ramone and Billy Idol. Ramones 50th Anniversary Tribute, Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Sunday, 08/30/2026. Dear Diary, California Sun. We had immediately rsvp’d YES upon receiving our invite to the Ramones Tribute being held at the end of the month at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, so right away we scheduled a rock and roll LA road trip for next week. And we can’t wait. This is the sort of thing we do now that we are living our best lives on the West Coast. We are blessed to have close friends like the glamorous and fabulous Linda Ramone, and we are excited to finally experience one of her legendary Ramones events. Although we obviously look forward to the punk supergroup Cretin Family performance and the John Travolta double feature, we are especially grateful to have the opportunity to celebrate our very missed pal Johnny Ramone and remember all the good times we had back when we were all New Yorkers. A stylized cartoon girl stands centered against a stark white background, the emptiness around her amplifying her posture and expression. She is drawn with exaggerated proportions: a large head, small body, and short stature that emphasize attitude over physical power. Her arms are crossed tightly across her chest, elbows jutting outward in a clear defensive and confrontational stance. Her face is set in a deep scowl, eyebrows sharply angled downward, eyes narrowed with irritation and stubborn resolve. Her cheeks are flushed with faint smudges and marks, giving the impression of recent scrapes or emotional friction. Long brown hair falls straight past her shoulders, held back with a simple headband, though a small tuft at the crown sticks up slightly, breaking any sense of neatness. She wears a sleeveless black vest layered over a faded purple shirt. The vest is heavily customized with metal spikes, patches, and skull charms that hang from the hem, adding weight and visual noise. Her arms show scuffs and bandage-like wraps, suggesting minor injuries or rough play turned serious. A simple skirt falls to her knees, worn and uneven, paired with striped socks and oversized boots. The boots dominate the lower frame, thick-soled and armored with spikes and studs. They appear heavy, scuffed, and overbuilt for her size, grounding her stance and reinforcing the contrast between youth and aggression. Small decorative tags and worn textures add to the sense of repeated use rather than costume. The illustration style is loose and textured, with visible brush strokes and sketch lines that give the character a raw, unfinished edge. Despite her size, the figure radiates resistance and refusal. Dear Diary, Saturday Night, part 1. Saturday afternoon, Todd and I drove up to Santa Cruz because local punk heroes Apricot Court were playing that night at the legendary Blue Lagoon. It was a fantastic show. We watched the band from the back of the club, keeping a healthy distance from the abundance of slam dancing happening in front of the stage. Apricot Court. Dear Diary, Even though Todd and I are wildly happy and incredibly satisfied with our lives since making the big move left to Green Acres two years ago, from time to time I do still have some Eva Gabor moments. With Todd’s birthday in less than a week, I find myself longing to hop on a subway or simply just walk out of my apartment building to roam the city streets in search of the perfect gift. I miss SHOPPING. This year, I think all of Todd’s birthday presents were purchased lamely online, which totally sucks. I used to always find success at The Cast down on Orchard Street. The Cast is the brainchild of our friend Chuck Bones, and Chuck is keeping the NYC punk dream alive and well on the Lower East Side with the clothes he designs and the style sizzle those looks ignite. There’s also well curated vinyl and books and photographs of legends and heroes to fuel that particular inspiration and desire. Chuck’s got good taste, as they say. Even though I’m currently a bit anti-fashion in regards to my own image, my next splurge in that direction is going to be The Cast’s “Bowery” jacket. Todd has one and I’m jealous, plus I think I can start wearing a biker jacket again now that I’ve hit a certain age and old loud and snotty disposition. I was imagining how cool it would be if The Cast had a California storefront, then I could simply jump in my car to compare the regular Bowery to the cropped version Chuck recommends for me. Perhaps The Cast West could be next door to the fantasy bar I envision opening and part of the scene I crave creating over by the Nu-Art Adult Theatre in North Monterey. Since Chuck is also a fabulous rockstar, maybe one of Chuck’s bands—the Trash Bags or the Gag Bags—would perform Friday nights at my bar. Since Chuck is also wonderfully tall and wildly good looking and totally fucking hot, maybe Chuck might make the occasional after hours appearance onstage at the notorious Nu-Art too. Places I’d Rather Be. The Cast. And I’d like to be there wi…

Dear Diary, Last Friday night, we went to see the punk band Apricot Court perform at Cuz’s Sportsman’s Club bar up in Seaside. Apricot Court is a VERY cool band. Although we love it out here, sometimes I find myself hyper aware of what is not really here. And alarmingly, what is probably never going to be here. It was a relief—as well as a rare and beautiful thing—to be able to feed a particular “punk” need last Friday night up in Seaside. Maybe you can understand this. Although Apricot Court hails from Pacific Grove and therefore totally local, the band sadly doesn’t play around here that often. Certainly not enough for Todd and me. One is much more likely to catch an Apricot Court gig a lot further north in Santa Cruz. Or way down south in Los Angeles, even. The magnificent Anthony Annigoni, guitarist and lead vocalist for Apricot Court, said to me, “They don’t like us here in Monterey. We’re too punk for ‘em. We come from the school of Joe Strummer, not heavy metal.” This resonates deeply. When I moved to New York City in 1987, I remember thinking it was the only place in the world that would want me. Up until that point, I had always felt like I was in the wrong location for lots of reasons. A different kind of punk, but also the same. Apricot Court has a new single out on Saturday. If you were actually any version of cool and/or punk, you’d support Apricot Court on all platforms. True Confessions by Bill Mullen.

#DearDiary, It felt like we were still moving even though we were permanently out of Manhattan over a year ago, but the dust eventually settled. There was free mental space all of a sudden once the big stuff was finally under control. And I had a little freak out. Todd sat me down and calmed me down. He slowly explained to me that he was thinking we needed to make some little escapes from time to time. San Francisco was the obvious, but perhaps LA every now and then. Maybe even Vegas. Fun road trips and quick plane rides to change it up. Big city fixes. I have been missing something. Ninety-five percent of the time I’m blessed and grateful, but every now and then I crave the edgy. The gritty. The sleazy. The dark and/or funky. Gay stuff. Artistic stuff. Punk stuff. Something wild. Our trip to SF last month was our first healing journey, and it did wonders. We’ve got another mini vacation planned for the end of October and I can’t fucking wait. Todd was right. He gets it. He gets me. Places I’d Rather Be. CBGB’s. And I’d like to be there with Richard Hell. #TrueConfessions by #BillMullen
