As a mixed-race person I’ve always felt in the boundary between worlds. Maybe this is why I’m drawn to certain figures from Filipino & Finnish folklore: nuno sa punso, haltija, tikbalang, and Ajatar. Guiding us through the in-between, they reframe what belonging means.

I'm nuno sa punso
In March I wrote a science-fantasy novella. Now it’s a trilogy codenamed Project Awakened! Here are some cool things:

#CreatureOfTheDay is the nuno sa punso, from Philippine folklore. The "old man of the mound" is a hobgoblin who lives in termite mounds. If you disturb his mound, his curses can include: vomiting blood, urinating black liquid, and hair growth on the back

Also, I’m too Filipino to mess around with an oddly-shaped “anthill”. Nuno sa punsô.
Little children: If you able to see fairy folk and duendes, and they invite you to come along with them to “another place” or to see the king/queen of the fairies/duendes, DON’T GO WITH THEM. So many stories of human children taken captive, and I honestly wouldn’t know how to deal with that.

Nuno- earth spirits who reside in mounds of earth called a punso.
Dwende- our word for dwarves. Earth spirits who act as caretakers and guardians of the natural world.

They are spiteful when wronged, but by being respectful to the spirits in nature and saying "tabi tabi po" (excuse me) before passing through an area, one can avoid mishaps with beings such as nuno sa punso.

Small old men known for retaliating with curses to those who haphazardly step on their homes.
Typically believed to live in mounds such as termite hills or ant hills, with these homes said to be in many locations such as yards, riverbanks, forests, and caverns.
For those who trod upon their home they spit upon the transgressor, cursing them.
If an ailment is not cured by modern medicine, it may be a nuno's curse.
The curse can range from swollen body parts, urinating black liquid, bloody vomit, and excessive hair growth on the back.
To cure the curse, one must appease the nuno sa punso, from offerings up to asking forgiveness.

My fave thing about writing SFF: Thinking about nuanced ways to explore my book's theme of finding community when you feel unworthy - then moving on to what curse the nuno sa punso will give and what flora grows in the permanent shadows of a tidally-locked planet. The best of all writing worlds!
