Purity culture is often presented as a way to protect women and preserve healthy marriages. But what happens when the same teachings that are supposed to prepare women for marriage also make it harder to leave when that marriage becomes unhealthy? In this video, we look at how purity culture can shape women's ideas about sex, divorce, submission, forgiveness, and what it means to be a “good wife.” From being taught to view marriage as permanent and divorce as failure to being encouraged to endure difficult circumstances for the sake of their family or faith, these messages can make staying feel more morally acceptable than leaving. We'll look at where these ideas come from, how they show up in Christian relationship advice, and why teachings about purity don't necessarily disappear once a woman gets married.
