Also on the rocks and trees at Carnasserie were these nice lichens: Mycobilimbia sphaeroides, Pyrenula macrospora, Peltigera horizontalis and Usnea flammea. #LichenGBI

A good day at Felbrigg Great Wood with Norfolk Fungus Study Group. Best for me was this Pyrenula macrospora, another western species not at all expected in Norfolk.

Pyrenula sp. with apothecia that look like mosquito bites or underground blackhead. There is something very satisfying about finding this lichen. Oiwake, Karuizawa, Nagano #Lichen #FungiFriends

Lovely lichens from Ards Forest Park, Donegal

Lobaria pulmonaria & Pannaria rubiginosa was locally abundant, even on young trees. Pyrenula macrospora was the dominant crustose lichen on ash

Other lichens included Pectenia atlantica, Lobarina scrobiculata & Ricasolia virens

The first lichen walk is this afternoon, Tuesday, at 2pm at Colonsay House. In a brief evening saunter yesteday, there were lots of lichens on the oak, sycamore and other trees, including Pectenia plumbea, Pyrenula macrospora, Pyrrhospora quernea and Collema furfuraceum. #LichenGBI

mmm... peppercorn sauce. Or maybe just a lichen. There's a tiny hemipteran nymph hiding in these photos, too.
I think the lichen is Pyrenula macrospora.

Great to be out again with Cumbria Lichen and Bryophyte group (after a gap of several months). Seatoller woods: mostly acid bark stuff including Ochrolechia tartarea and more Hypotrachyna taylorensis than I've ever seen before. Also Pyrenula acutispora: new to me. #LichenGBI

Pyrenula macrospora, Dermatocarpon minitum, Lecanactis abietina fertile and Parmotrema crinitum gone berserk. #LichenGBI

The red lichens: Pachyphiale carneola wine gum fruits. Coniocarpon cinnabarinum usually with distinctive red pruina on the fruit. Pyrenula occidentalis thallus is orange-brown with black perithecia. Loxospora elatina is K+yellow and Caz found the very rare reddish brown apothecia. #LichenGBI

Said temperate rainforest cryptogams:

- Pyrenula chlorospila/macrospora with insurgence of Graphina ruiziana (1st Louth record)
- Hyocomium armoricum
- Peltigera horizontalis
- Jubula hutchinsiae

Rostrevor Oakwood and the Glen Stream today

Refound the 2004 record of Jubula hutchinsiae, a hyper oceanic liverwort of humid sites. Plagiochila spinulosa was nearby on a large boulder. Ash had lovely colonies of crustose lichen Pyrenula macrospora

The biodiversity blew my mind and also reminded me how depauperate most of Ireland is in comparison. Great to see lichen diversity and even a Phasia hemiptera feeding on clovers!

One last photo taken at the shore - this time at the top of the beach at the tree line. Holly tree with what appears to be the same lichen covering the whole trunk in a lovely mosaic pattern. Think it’s Pyrenula sp. I’d like to have some wallpaper like this.

Rarely seen extreme host specificity across the Neotropics between the lichens Pyrenula psoriformis, Pyrenula sauria sp. nov. (Eurotiomycetes: Pyrenulaceae), and Bonellia trees

In tropical ecosystems specificity of lichen species to their phorophyte is rarely seen. Instead, lichen communities show a loose preference for group…

Wow Donna really nice temperate rainforest there. 1st and 2nd photo has the purple liverwort Frullania tamarisci. Some Peltigera collina possibly in the 2nd photo. 3rd photo looks like Pyrenula occidentalis - quite rare in Ireland!

Is this Pyrenula chlorospila? Part of a mosaic on a notable maiden Hornbeam in Ashburnham Place SSSI woodland, East Sussex, southern oceanic woodland. Would fit Pyrenuletum nitidae association (James et al (1977)) seen on Hornbeam in south east England. @fayrnhawk.bsky.social @aspenecology.com Thanx

Phylogenetic analysis shows that Pyrenula (Pyrenulaceae) diversity is larger than expected: three new species and one new record discovered in China https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39574797/

Thanks, @sim-elliott.bsky.social. Hard to say. Doesn't look like what I understand of typical Pyrenula, though we don't have it much in East Anglia, and I haven't seen it myself. In any case, you'd probably need to examine spores: P macrospora and P chlorospila can be easily confused I think.

Thanks, Sim. Probably not K+ yellow: I think only K+yellow pyrenocarps are Pyrenula, which are corticolous, and most are all negative (except some involucrelli in section on slide). Jenny might be able to say more, but I suspect you'll need to examine perithecia under microscope to go much further!
