Today's trip out was to Hagar Qim & Mnajdra Archaeological sites 3,800 BCE. Such ancient wonders older than Stonehenge. Beautiful day for it!

Went to visit two temples in Malta from the neolithic period, c. 3600 BCE- Hagar Qim and Mnajdra. Fascinating, and they had some bonus #astronomy! (alignment to the solstices)

Final day in Malta, and I visited the Ħagar Qim and Mnajdra temples, some of the oldest freestanding structures in the world. These were something I always wanted to see, but the surrounding view was something else. Genuinely breathtaking, could even see Tunisia on the horizon. Best €10 I ever spent
Selfie where I’m in the sun, sat on a rocky cliff side (but not too close to the edge!) with the vibrant blue Mediterranean Sea in the background. Close to the water front, you can see a natural stone arch. On the horizon, you can just make a long thin rise of land: this is the African continent, specifically Tunisia. Part of the Ħagar Qim Neolithic temple complex, a structure built of yellow weathered limestone. This part has doors and pillars, with some of the stones having numerous drilled holes covering them. The meaning behind these holes is unknown: could be decorative, could be a form of timekeeping.

At Ħaġar Qim on the right day the morning light filters in over the lonesome island of Filfla and fills in a hole drilled in the sandstone five thousand years ago, and has done so unfailingly over the millennia that have seen countless empires rise and fall.

The inside of Hagar Qim, looking south the temple seems to have been constructed with this view on Filfla in mind. Of course, much of it has since gone missing like the roof and the temple we see was the result of multiple phases of construction. So whether this was done on purpose, and for what purpose if so, I don't know. Photo by me.
