Several older participants recited a particular Qazaq proverb that really struck me. It translates from Qazaq to English as follows: “IF YOUR FRIEND IS RUSSIAN, KEEP AN AXE HANDY.” As a Qazaq who grew up speaking Russian, I had never heard it before. 7/10

As a thoroughly russified Qazaq kid growing up in the 1980s Almaty, I had deeply internalized the Russo-centric view of Qazaq-speaking Qazaqs as being rural and backwards. Embarrassingly, for many years, I failed to understand what now seems so painfully obvious. 1/10

As a one-time Russophile, I gradually awakened to a more realistic view of Russia & Russians. The many horrors of Russia’s invasions of Georgia and Ukraine have been my wake up calls. I also learned something important about the Qazaq-speaking Qazaq folks. 4/10

As post-Soviet Russia reverted to its roots as a murderous colonial power, my lopsided love affair with Russian language and culture came to an end. My old contempt for Qazaq language and culture has been replaced with attempts to learn Qazaq and regret about the loss. 3/10

Today Qazaqs make up around 70% of the population, a dramatic increase in just 35 years. New Qazaq schools opened across the country. My own Russian school in the heart of Almaty is now a Qazaq school. Qazaq has been making a comeback while the dominance of Russian has lessened.

Asiya survived. She became a teacher and, eventually, a principal of a Qazaq school. However, when Moscow decided to accelerate Russification, hundreds of Qazaq schools were shattered and replaced with Russian ones. A lifelong Qazaq speaker, she no longer had an occupation.

Not that "Canadian" is an ethnicity the way that "Qazaq" or "Kyrgyz" or "Uyghur" are, but you see my point, I hope.

Asiya’s father, Akhmet Barzhaksin, was a prominent Qazaq intellectual who authored articles on public education and gender equality and collected Qazaq proverbs, eventually publishing them in book form. He resigned from the Bolshevik party in 1928.

Having internalized Russian colonial gaze, I had once foolishly viewed Qazaq-speaking people as archaic and ignorant. It turns out I was the ignorant one. It is humbling to have been so wrong for such a long time. But, as they say, better late than never. 10/10

It turned out that many of them have had a far more accurate view of Russia all along. When collecting interviews with Qazaq speakers for a recent research project, I was deeply impressed by their empathy with Ukraine’s struggle against Russian imperialism. 5/10

Israeli airline ElAl, Kazakhstan's QAZAQ, and Azerbaijan Airlines (AzAl) have all previously done the same.
Overall, international flights flying above 26 regions of Russia have been halted. Most of these regions were hit by drone attacks in the past.

During Moscow’s rule in Qazaqstan, ethnic Qazaqs who did not master Russian lived as second class citizens in their own land because educational and professional opportunities for Qazaq speakers were extremely limited. Russian was presented as the gateway to modernity. 9/10
