I made an Oz-inspired suite of backgrounds for
@melsonia.bsky.social's TROIKA! game. Do you want to be a gentle crocodile, an erudite creature grown to giant size, or a lost star, exploring Quadling Country?

Yeah, there isn’t really any colonial subtext to the Animals story. The *novel* has blatant colonialism directed at the Quadlings and the Winkies/Vinkus, but none of that is brought into the musical or film.

I’m so happy to be at CommaCon — a small conference for #editors — for a few days with the #mastermind group (the Quadlings) I’m part of. We’ve been #friends & #advisors to each other for a decade: Lori Paximadis, Laura Poole, Erin Brenner, Sarah Grey, Amy Schneider, Adrienne Montgomerie, & me. ❤️

thinking about how the wicked musical and movie leave out this subplot where the wizard essentially colonizes the quadlings to mine rubies from their land, which is kind of insane considering most of elphaba’s childhood was spent on a charitable/religious mission there bc her father is a priest

“She” as in, That Girl™
“‘They” as in, in the sequel to Wicked, Elphaba’s son joins the Emerald City Gaurd (basically ICE) and is involved in an act of genocide against the Quadlings, who have red skin and live in the southern lands, and I just think it’s funny how…

i like this book a lot there’s so much to dig in with the rising fascism in oz on the back of the apartheid and genocide of marginalized groups (Animals, quadlings) i have things o would challenge like above but largely it’s been really satisfying (and horrifying!) to read. and there’s yuri 🤗

Love how you can immediately tell that Oz was based on the American Midwest/plains, cause it has one of the laziest fantasy maps I've ever seen ☠️

(good, cont.)
The acting and singing were amazing, most really showing off what they could do.
The book (Quadlings, Mombi, etc) and 1939 film (bubble, gingham, animal in the wicked witch bicycle basket) were nice touches, expanding the world rather than being played as weird.

The musical misses the theme of hopeless causes
*by making Frex the governor not a priest. Hes a failure of a missionary and Elphie spends her entire childhood being dragged around trying to convert the Quadlings as theyre being rounded up into concentration camps. Taking that away is a bummer

so instead of all blue or all green, the Quadlings are all red. I guess that means that in the North everything is yellow.
