It's sort of funny that "sports" is the first place you went to when seeing a quantitative analysis.

QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSISSSSSSS
November 5, 2026 at 2:05 PM
One thing I learned from doing formal coursework in this stuff is that sometimes trying to make inferences from rudimentary data analysis is worse than eschewing quantitative analysis entirely

Why did @thexylom.com, a science news outlet, cover the No Kings rallies?

For one, a lot of the protesters appeared to be alarmed by the direction of American science, health, environment, and climate policy.

Two, it was important to bring our quantitative rigor to estimate protest activity.

I don't doubt that he actually does have quantitative skills. That's how I know he knows what he's doing.

understand that they must attend to the quantitative aspect of things -- the basic statistics, the main percentages and the quantitative limits that determine the qualities of things. They have no "figures" in their heads and as a result cannot help making mistakes.

i'm not sure what value in all there is in attempting quantitative analysis of categories best applied via "vibes"

Super cool study on the evolution of collective behavior in fish!
Nice merge of comparative phylogenetic methods with quantitative behavior.
How and why does collective behavior evolve? Despite decades of interest and a lot of hypotheses, we've had a hard time settling on a solid answer. My recent research takes us a step in that direction. Published today in PNAS with @akfbio.bsky.social and amazing collaborators not on bluesky! 🧵

"Have a head for figures." That is to say, we must attend to the quantitative aspect of a situation or problem and make a basic quantitative analysis. Every quality manifests itself in a certain quantity, and without quantity there can be no quality. To this day many of our comrades still do not

Not sure about that, quantitative analysis and statistical analysis may not support this statement.

Stop.
Making.
Up.
Percent.
Beliefs.

Cowen has no idea what the chance is, bc none of us do. We all have subjective guesses, but saying “20%” is such faux-precision.

It’s okay—PREFERABLE!—to just say “it’s hard to say, given how little real quantitative data we have.”
I dunno a 20 percent chance of permanent fascism seems bad to me, I am but a dumb non-academic www.liberalcurrents.com/was-democrac...

Today is a historical moment for the epidemiology profession. And for politics.

It's important to have political leaders who understand data and how easily it can mislead and be used to mislead.

A training in epidemiology is the ultimate vaccination against quantitative misinformation!
