A New Chemistry Breakthrough Could Change How Scientists Build Quantum Computers
By modeling diamond defects as molecules, scientists can predict their behavior faster and identify promising building blocks for quantum computers and sensors. Most materials being considered for quantum technology can hold a stable quantum state only when chilled to extreme temperatures. Diamond-based materials can work at room temperature, but their usefulness depends on defects in the crystal that have been difficult and computationally demanding to simulate. At the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), staff research scientist Mark Martirez has developed a far faster way to calculate how those defects respond to light and microwave pulses. The approach has identified promising boron- and oxygen-based defects that could serve as qubits, the basic information-processing units of quantum computers and sensors. The research was recently published in ACS Central Science and has already attracted attention from other experts in the field. Diamond’s flaws can store quantum information Pure diamond consists entirely of carbon atoms, but storing and processing quantum information requires a disruption in that structure. A carbon atom might be missing from its usual position, an atom of another element might take its place, or both changes might occur together. The cluster of atoms closest to the...

Can quantum computers solve AI's sustainability problem?
In January 2025, stocks for quantum computing companies across the board tumbled when Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang predicted it would be another 30 years before we saw a “very useful” quantum computer. One of those companies, IonQ, saw its largest single-day drop with shares plunging 40%. Now, less than two years later, IonQ has announced a new partnership to deploy Nvidia’s first-ever quantum computer. With this move, the world’s most valuable company joins the likes of Google, AWS and IBM in deploying new quantum technology. This comes amid an expanding backdrop of new data centres being constructed to meet artificial intelligence’s staggering appetite for computing power. As Corporate Knights has previously reported, data centres require spectacular quantities of water and energy. By its own estimates, OpenAI alone – one of Nvidia’s largest clients – expects to consume as much energy as the country of India and, according to other analyses, emit twice as much carbon as the world’s largest oil companies. While the advent of quantum computing is unlikely to slow this colossal build-out in the short term, it does open up some interesting possibilities for addressing these challenges. Quantum computers are experimental machines that can perform fiendishly difficult computing...

Quantum computer maker IonQ to buy cybersecurity startup Elisity for $1.3B
IonQ Inc., a publicly traded supplier of quantum computers, today announced plans to acquire Elisity Inc. for $1.3 billion. The price tag includes $150 million in performance incentives that are contingent on Elisity meeting certain business milestones. The all-stock deal is set to close by year’s end. IonQ’s flagship product is a 256-qubit quantum computer called Superion 256 that debuted last month. Its qubits are ions, or charged particles, suspended in a vacuum. The system encodes data into the ions and reads out processing results using a control device made with standard chipmaking equipment. IonQ says the device is more practical than the highly complicated, bulky lasers typically used for those tasks. The company also competes in the cybersecurity market. Last year, it bought a Swiss startup called ID Quantique that developed a series of physical data encryption devices. They use quantum mechanical phenomena to protect customer data. Today’s acquisition will extend IonQ’s cybersecurity portfolio to additional use cases. Elisity offers a software platform that can automatically map out the devices in a corporate network. It spots employee workstations, servers and more specialized endpoints such as factory sensors. Elisity then collects technical data about each device. The platform can, for...
