This is why I hate the “it has to be subtle!!!” Critique of queer media. The fact that we can’t just say what we are or what the character is is so reductive and constraining to so many queer writers. Don’t let cis people dictate how you show you identity. They don’t know what they’re saying.
When trans creators are subtle, people dismiss the trans subtext as “headcanon.”
When trans creators are loud and proud, people call it “obnoxious” and “cringe.”
They just don’t want us to be represented in media at all. Because they don’t want us to exist at all.

I hold the somewhat controversial belief that we should make certain historically straight characters queer, not out of some vague desire for increased queer representation, but because there are certain characters for whom being straight objectively does not make sense.
