it works on real hardware but also really well in 86box. plus installs all the win98 drivers on the HDD as an option which if you know you know will save you hours.

Installed this ESS 1868F card with an Admos QDSP700 wavetable chipset into my Neoware CA-2 Thin Client, and Windows 98 Quickinstall already had the matching drivers.
The Wavetable sounds AWESOME!

What's kinda shitty about CA AB1043 is it isn't super clear where retrocomputing projects land on this. Like I know Win9x QuickInstall says "do not use if in CA", but would QuickInstall be construed as an update to Win9x? I could see some dumb lawmaker thinking that, probably.

At this point it might be worth explaining what the box is about!
So a fellow german who you might know from releasing W98 Quickinstall is going to attempt to FIX this stuff.
He recently succeeded with a Ti 4800 SE where he identified and replaced the defective RAM chip causing artifacts!

Possibly a future video idea, if I can get 9x QuickInstall working well enough with the PCI Radeon 9250 on my Dell Vostro 400. Because it's a Core 2 Quad system, I'd have to settle with Windows 11 23H2 and not the supposedly 9x worse 24H2/25H2 Home versions. Only instance where I wish it was Nehalem

Can anyone help identify this sound card?
No markers that I was able to successfully google, the chip(s) in pic 3 are completely unreadable.
I can tell it is using one of these unlicensed but genuine Yamaha OPL3s, but need to find out the exact model for supported sound standards.

The installation went well on it, too! Zero issues getting to a post-installation desktop.

The Asus CUBX has USB ports but no boot from USB option, so I installed W98 via Windows 98 Quickinstall from a DVD, it said the installation was successful, and yet here we are with the infinite blinking cursor of doom.

Quickinstall makes it a LOT better.
But I still have this QDI Legend Superb 1 board that has USB ports, but doesn't support booting from USB.
In a case that has no space for optical drives.
I can't even copy stuff from my USB drive to HDD because it isn't recognized.

God I hate installing Win98.
Quickinstall makes it a LOT better.

Windows 98 Quickinstall reproducably hangs as soon as I choose to partition the disk.
Couldn't boot from USB so this is from DVD. Reburned it, changed the drive, changed the drive cable, changed RAM, the disk is known working and gets recognized in BIOS.

Ordered a new charger for a dinky little Gateway netbook I've had laying around for a long while. I was initially thinking about trying QuickInstall to put Windows 98 on it but tbh I might just keep XP and see what I can do after installing Legacy Update

Basically you must NOT let the QuickInstall:
- Format the C drive❌
- Update the MBR❌
- Format the C drive❌

Playing around with a HP Probook 430 G5.. and Win98-quickinstall.. ofc it wont boot, but I think I can fix that.. Ventoy was clearly not the way, if I don't want to break legacy support. Sooooo.. RUFUS it is. :3

I think I did see something about using USB floppy drives so maybe when I'm feeling brave I'll try using Plop to boot CloneZilla and/or QuickInstall
