"The whooppoo saith" leaps out. This must be the hoopoe, which is a very rare sighting in the British Isles (I've only ever seen one). Its appearance in this book implies that the hoopoe was much more common here in the 1600s.

Female Wigeon with young in Northeast Scotland this week. Now’s a great time for confirming breeding by Wigeon and other rare breeding ducks e.g. Shoveler, Pintail, Garganey, Pochard & Goldeneye

Mark, I had this one down as one of the hybrids. Eye crescents, face patch and the bill for me isn't quite Shoveler. Not sure you can have that one for the RBBP report. ???

Breeding evidence is a key component of rare breeding birds recording. Here’s RBBP Secretary @markaeaton.bsky.social with a brief primer for those who’d rather be birding than watching our longer version (youtu.be/nYEtKaAH7RU?...)

Earlier had Euro Bird Breeding Atlas off shelf, and author of Med Gull piece (RBBP member btw😉) referenced a paper evidencing low philopatry and mentioned a pr that bred in 3 different colonies in 3 consecutive yrs.

If you appreciate local colonies= not only UK, but incs over the Channel..

Could, story is not true. 000s of MedGus in n Kent throughout Apr. Problem is eg any boat count of our mid-estuary tidal islands made on abv avg MHWS can under-represent nos; they will be ashore as islands largely under. Why RBBP recommend no surveys Apr? May and Jun bring lower spring tides.

Last week we talked about how to submit records of rare breeding birds. This week we move onto what those records should contain - the details - precise location, numbers, breeding evidence and so on - to make them as useful as possible for the work of the RBBP.
