The RBGU can be identified by the black ring encircling the tip of its yellow bill but there are other gulls with dark (or red) spots on their bills, so make sure it rings the bill all the way around. 🦉 To make things even more complicated, sometimes RBGU will interbreed with other gulls including

#Birded the Mission Valley (w. MT) today...mostly at Ninepipe NWR. This refuge is 1700 acres of terminal moraine established on Trust lands of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Great aesthetics and birdlife. Checked off 7 year species: BNST, RBGU, CAGU, WEGR, EAGR, RNGR, FOTE No 🦤 😊
This photo is from atop National Bison Range looking north over the Mission Valley and rugged Mission Mountains. Photo of a large body of shallow water habitat on Ninepipe NWR. Established as a irrigation reservoir in 1910. Several islands serve as roost and nesting substrate for a variety of bird species (how many can you make out?). Closer view of one of the reservoir islands used by multitudes of gulls, mostly Ring-billed with lesser number of California Gulls. Western Grebe is a common species on the Ninepipe NWR Reservoir. This grebe is basically black and white. It has a long neck, white in front and black in rear. The head is capped black extending below red eye. The narrow yellowish bill is nearly as long as head width. Both the mantle and abdomen are a light black.
