A look at some of our #RareBooks for #WorldBeeDay. The author of this 1609 guide was among the first to recognise the largest bee was female.

We also showcase some 18th century bees, wasps and ants from The genera insectorum of Linnaeus by James Barbut.

The genera insectorum of Linnaeus (1781) by English naturalist and painter James Barbut Feminine Monarchie 2 by Charles Butler Feminine Monarchie 3 by Charles Butler - As well as being a practical guide to skep or basket beekeeping, the 1623 edition includes a ‘bee-madrigal’ or musical notations of a bee’s hum. 2 parts are printed upside down, so 4 singers could sing from the same page. Butler also published works on logic, cousin marriage, grammar, and music and was an advocate of spelling reform. The 1634 edition is written in his own phonetic spelling.
