TIL that Spring's RestClient does not automatically add an Accept header to its requests like RestTemplate does. We have migrated a lot of clients already, but only now encountered the first backend that compained about a missing Accept header.

In the process of migrating a huge monorepo using 1000s of lines of code with Spring's RestTemplate to use RestClient. It's an easy mistake to leave an existing HttpEntity that was passed as the request to the template and now pass it to the RestClient's body() method: still compiles, but wrong.

Jev doesn't generate text. It answers typed questions in about 100ms. One RestClient, one endpoint, and a messy support message returns three typed answers. No prompt. No JSON parsing. Here's how to call it from Spring Boot 4.

Adding style in GeoServer with restsharp
I can add a new style application/zip with Postman into GeoServer, but I can't do it with C#-RestSharp. How can I do this? string url = "http://" + server + "/geoserver/rest/styles?name="+ StyleName; var client = new RestClient(url); var request = new RestRequest(Method.POST); string authInfo = username + ":" + password; request.AddHeader("authorization", "Basic " + Convert.ToBase64String(Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(authInfo))); request.AddHeader("cache-control", "no-cache"); request.AddHeader("content-type", "application/zip"); request.AddHeader("authorization", "Basic YWRtaW46Z2Vvc2VydmVy"); FileStream uploadFileStream = System.IO.File.OpenRead(@"D:\aa.zip"); request.AddParameter("application /zip", uploadFileStream, ParameterType.RequestBody); IRestResponse response = client.Execute(request); --- string url = "http://..../geoserver/rest/styles?name=" + StyleName; wsn = "mystyle"; WebRequest request = WebRequest.Create(url); request.ContentType = "application/vnd.ogc.sld+xml"; request.Method = "POST"; string authInfo = username + ":" + password; request.Headers["Authorization"] = "Basic " + Convert.ToBase64String(Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(authInfo)); request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(username, password); byte[] buffer = Encoding.GetEncoding("UTF-8").GetBytes(wsn); Stream reqstr = request.GetRequestStream(); reqstr.Write(buffer, 0, buffer.Length); reqstr.Close();

For testing my app's API, I've been using an org-mode file with restclient source blocks to test different flows. This is one of those things where #Emacs really shines, and I'm only beginning to scratch the surface of what's possible.

Sadly, I just found that the repo of restclient has been archived on github: github.com/pashky/restc... , it really is a great package!

Seems like this is not an easy task. Folks suggested some options like dbeaver, dbvis, etc. on slack, but none can be installed from the dnf repo, so at last I fell back to use the CLI instead, at least for the moment. Ideally, I love something like restclient #Emacs.

hi Thomas,
I was trying to reuse your audio example in my demo, but I keep getting some errors about HttpMessageConversionException: Type definition error: [simple type, class java.io.ByteArrayInputStream] when OpenAiAudioApi calls the RestClient. In case you've seen that before :)

Or if you use #Emacs install restclient 😉

Rest Client - Fetch
## Learn How to Use Fetch and Create a Reusable Rest Client in JavaScript In this blog post, we’ll explore the basics of the Fetch API and how to create a reusable RestClient class to simplify your HTTP requests in web applications. Table of Contents What is Fetch? Using Fetch: Examples * GET Request * POST Request Reusable RestClient Class Using RestClient in React ### 🛰️ What is Fetch? The Fetch API is a modern JavaScript interface used to make HTTP requests to servers. It returns a Promise, which can be handled with async/await or .then() syntax. To learn more about Promises, check the MDN documentation. ### 🚀 Using Fetch: Examples ✅ GET Request fetch('https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/todos/1') .then(response => response.json()) .then(json => console.log(json)); Response: `{ "userId": 1, "id": 1, "title": "delectus aut autem", "completed": false }` This makes a simple GET request and parses the JSON response. ### 📤 POST Request const request = { title: 'foo', body: 'bar', userId: 1, }; fetch('https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/posts', { method: 'POST', body: JSON.stringify(request), headers: { 'Content-type': 'application/json; charset=UTF-8', }, }) .then(response => response.json()) .then(json => console.log(json)); For POST, PUT, and DELETE, you must explicitly define the method, headers, and body as shown above. ### 🧰 Reusable RestClient Class To avoid repeating fetch() logic throughout the app, I’ve created a reusable RestClient class. It simplifies HTTP communication and promotes consistency across requests. ✅ Features 1. Supports GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE requests. 2. Returns a standardized response object with helpful metadata. 3. Maps common HTTP error codes to friendly messages (e.g., 401 → "Unauthorized"). 4. Supports optional request cancellation using AbortController. #### ⚙️ Environment Setup This project uses Vite + React with the following environment variables: VITE_BASE_API_URL=https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com VITE_API_VERSION=v1 # Optional #### 🧱 ApiResponse Interface interface ApiResponse<T> { success: boolean; data: T | null; message: string; error?: unknown; statusCode?: number; } This interface defines the standard structure for all responses. Whether a request succeeds or fails, you can consistently check: 1. `success`: if the request was successful 2. `data`: the returned payload 3. `message`: a user-friendly summary 4. `statusCode`and error: optional debugging info ### 🧪 Example: Testing RestClient with Abort Support Let’s see a real-world React component using the httpGetAsync() method with cancellation support via AbortController. export const RestClientTest = () => { const [controller, setController] = useState<AbortController | null>(null); useCommands( { actions: [ { label: "Send", variant: "solid", onClick: async () => { const newController = new AbortController(); setController(newController); const res = await restClient.httpGetAsync( "/posts", undefined, newController ); if (!res.success) { toast.warn(res.message); return; } console.log(res); }, }, { label: "Abort Controller", variant: "ghost", onClick: async () => { controller?.abort(); }, }, ], }, [controller] ); return <div>Rest Client Test</div>; }; #### 📷 Example Output Here’s what you’ll see in the console after a successful request: 1. Clicking "Send" starts an HTTP GET request using restClient.httpGetAsync(). ### 🧪 Simulating a Slow Request To test the cancellation feature, you can simulate slow network conditions in your browser: 1. Open DevTools → Network tab. 2. Change the throttling to "Slow 3G". 3. Click Send and then Abort Request quickly. 4. This cancels the in-progress HTTP request before the response arrives: 5. Clicking "Send" starts an HTTP GET request using restClient.httpGetAsync(). 6. Clicking "Abort Request" cancels the ongoing request using AbortController. ## 🚀 Full Source Code GitHub Repo - RestClientFetch Thank you for reading all the way through. I hope this implementation helps you write cleaner, more reusable, and easier-to-maintain code. See you in the next post! 🚀

If you like turning HTTP into code, you'll be excited to hear that HTTP Toolkit can now export requests as ready-to-use code for:

- Rust's Reqwest library
- Ruby's Faraday library
- Crystal's built-in APIs
- Spring RestClient on the JVM

Plus plenty of other fixes & tweaks to improve other cases.

I constantly use a great demo from @ciberkleid.bsky.social that really lays bare just how good it is. in the demo, I have a Spring `RestClient` (which uses blocking IO) that calls httpbin.org/delay/5 from a Spring MVC controller method.
