Neither Raleigh nor Thom said much in the back of the stifling GrayCar as it rattled down the deserted, pitted asphalt towards the warehouse. They barely knew each other, really. Acquaintances with just a few functional sentences exchanged by chance, they were both in the same cohort back at the Clomoco’s experiential learning village, a kind of halfway house putatively intended to help teenagers raised in the group transition into the workforce, but really just to provide extremely cheap labour for local businesses who needed dirty, boring, and sometimes dangerous work undertaken at short notice. Raleigh, built with the bulky, muscular aspect of a hyena, was older than the slender, floppy-eared doglike Thom—Thom thought by a couple of years or more—and had a reputation for being kind of aloof and quiet. He certainly wasn’t doing anything to challenge that image right now. Thom, uncomfortable, hot, and bored, absently kicked his deep green Saudi Aramco-branded sneakers at the synthetic carpet under the front seat of the GrayCar. “Cut it out,” came a grunt from the driver, catlike eyes in the rear view mirror, “I just replaced that carpet.” He muttered to himself. “Fucking Clomoco jobs.” “Sorry.” Thom said.

The huge body hovering over him. The hot breath against his face. The white teeth and lolling tongue. The shape of a much larger doglike’s arousal, laid against his own and the soft fur of his belly, twitching. He knew his job now was not to resist. To stop pretending to be a person and let the bigger guy use him. To not make the wrong move. Any moment now he was sure Branson’s instincts would take over. He would not be able to stop. With Marie’s airlock door showing as a small green icon in the head-up display of his helmet, Thom buried a sickening pang of longing and kept walking, until he had traversed the exterior of the platform, and was approaching the battered control computer on the edge of the freight cell, a vast grey box limpeted onto the underside of the secondary docking platform. The computer was idling, thank God, and it slowly woke up as Thom pushed at its pressure-sensitive touchscreen. It was designed to work through any kind of glove, but deeply unresponsive and slow. It was as basic as any computer he could remember using. Timer. Yeah, right. Thom felt his muzzle twitch and his throat dry. Painstakingly, trying not to think about Marie sitting in the vacuum cutter waiting for him, he squished the down arrow icon until the screen scrolled down far enough to show the PURGE CELL option. It asked him–again, thank God–at which orientation the purge needed to take place. He checked and double checked that he was selecting the face of the cell that was on the same side as Marie’s airlock. That way, the junk would spew out in the same direction that the vacuum cutter would be blown out into space. Christ, he hoped she was wearing her helmet. He had never lied to her in all the time they'd been together. Doing so had hurt so, so much. Having to keep a straight face. To notice her, how she looked at him, how beautiful she was, how strong, how perfect. That she loved him. And to lie and say he was going to come back, when in fact he was walking away from her, knowing he would never see her again. But he just could not let Amara take her. She had to get away. Maybe it was selfish of him, but he did not think he could endure the pain of losing her. Or worse, of living himself and knowing that he could have taken this one last opportunity to save her. And who was he, anyway, compared with her? The things she had done! The difference she had already made! He was a footnote to her. Sh… A deep rumbling through his boots as he felt the doors on the end of the freight cell rolling open. It seemed to take forever. He panted, checking the camera feeds from the ship. Still nothing, but that didn’t mean anything. They could have entered anywhere that the cameras didn’t cover, which was, well, most of the fucking ship. He would have to– A huge pulse, then, felt vibrating through his soles, and Thom gasped, as a hurricane of garbage spewed out of the freight cell. There was so much. It was pushing the whole ship! It was making it pitch forward, and soon, Thom could see Rameses after all. Thom panicked. The garbage was slowly forming a kind of crescent as it moved, and– Fuck! The airlock! Thom selected the door icon in his helmet display and double pinched with his fingers. He felt a small vibration through his boots and a huge rush of air, its moisture freezing into a white cloud, blasted out of Marie’s airlock, followed by the tumbling shape of her vacuum cutter. Thom felt a stab as he saw it go past, and he watched it pitch into the darkness, willing it to reach a velocity that would match the core of the trash field, as if watching some cosmic game of curling. A mad impulse made him wonder if he could just leap out after the cutter, and let the momentum carry him to it. Catch up, climb into the cockpit, into her arms. He let himself have the fantasy. Just for a few seconds. Just for a few seconds. After a minute, it was a moot point. He lost sight of it amongst the floating garbage. Thom exhaled. Tears welled in his eyes, but he couldn’t wipe them away. He had to go back inside. Amara’s men would be here soon. They were probably inside already. As Thom re-entered the ship, and took off his helmet, he walked in a daze through the darkened hallways, not really knowing where he was going, what he was doing. tbh I'm being flippant; this story is one of the things I'm proudest of in my recent burst of writing. It blends the erotic stuff with some intense action in a persistent and convincing original setting with characters i love intensely and who i try hard to represent truthfully
